Instead of confronting his mom, her husband asked his wife to apologise

A 27-year-old woman (u/sugahmamah) nullified her marriage just 25 days after her wedding because her evil mother-in-law (MIL) weaponized her latex allergy, which almost cost her life. She took to Reddit to share how her ex-MIL, who knew about his allergy, purposely added a layer of latex under her duvet cover. In no time, the allergy caught up, and the woman had to be rushed to the hospital in severe condition. What acted as the final straw, however, was her ex-husband's reaction to the situation. Her story has received over 7,000 upvotes on the platform.
The woman had a crazy allergy to latex. In fact, as a toddler, she once went into shock after a hospital nurse touched her with gloves. Since then, she has always carried an allergy sticker on her driver’s license and worn an allergy necklace. "I can literally die from sniffing a glove," she explained, describing the intensity of her allergy. Now, her ex-MIL knew about her allergy, yet she attempted something that caused the woman to lose all trust in her marriage.
The other day, when the woman returned home from work, she went to bed early. She had bought a new bed since her ex-mother-in-law used the older one on their wedding night. "When I lay in bed, it felt really comfy, but I could feel a small layer of plastic under my mattress. I assumed that this was normal since it is a new bed; I might have missed some plastic cover on the mattress. I didn't think about it much and went to sleep," the woman recalled. However, 17 hours later, she woke up straight in a hospital after her ex-husband found her "white as a ghost and sweating and barely breathing." The woman finally realized the reason behind her deteriorated health. Well, her partner's mom had cut up 75 latex gloves to create a little layer under her duvet cover. "She told Ex-DH that she was afraid I would wet the bed, since I acted so childish," she shared.

The woman was hospitalized for a week, and during that time, her ex visited her once and asked her to apologize to his mom. She, however, refused and asked the security not to allow him back into her room. Moreover, the woman expressed astonishment regarding her partner's behavior. They had been together for five years before getting married, and he had never been so insensitive before. "It is like I married a man that I have never met before — I am still shaking with anger and disappointment," the woman shared.

After Reddit’s suggestion, the woman started calling her MIL “Latex Luci,” taking the name from the evil character "Lucifer." After the incident, Latex Luci was sentenced to 13 months in prison, followed by a month-long stay in a psychiatric ward. Her aunt, a lawyer, helped her clear the matter, and she also obtained a restraining order against her ex. In a third update, the woman, however, clarified that her ex-MIL was out on bail, and how it has scared her to death. "I am scared that the psycho of a woman will somehow find me. I am just glad I am not alone," she added.
The woman might have had the extreme case of a MIL, but a difficult MIL is not so uncommon a scenario in America. In fact, when Terri Apter, a psychologist at Cambridge University, surveyed 163 people and collected data, she found over 60% of women felt relationship friction with their mothers-in-law, per TIME. These women confessed that their husbands’ mothers had caused them long-term stress. Similarly, another study published in the International Journal of Neurolinguistics & Gestalt Psychology documented a survey of old women. The study revealed that 68% of respondents reported having strained relationships with their daughter-in-law. Researchers also noted that this non-rapport with their MILs caused significant distress and dissatisfaction in their marital relationships, sometimes to the point of separation, as in the case of this woman.

Meanwhile, people online defended the woman and called out her ex-mother-in-law for being so evil. For instance, u/hellonhighheels94 said, "That's attempted murder, she's insane." Similarly, another user, u/lilredheadstepsheep, suggested, "She tried to kill you. I hope they arrest her sooner rather than later.
