'Like with everything in our life, I do the heavy lifting and get what's left...' she said.

A woman (u/shadyruh2497) ended her marriage because her husband ate her slice of anniversary cake. The reason may seem lame, but after spending years giving her everything and getting nothing in return, she finally decided to take charge and walk away. She shared her story on Reddit on October 20, 2025.

It was their 25th wedding anniversary, and the husband had planned a surprise trip for his wife. She was excited because lately they'd been fighting a lot, and the plan looked like it could fix their marriage. In fact, things had deteriorated so much that the couple were sleeping in different rooms. However, the woman was confident that the anniversary trip would rekindle their marriage, especially because both of them looked pretty enthusiastic about the plan. "The drive was 4 hours away, and I was excited. When I realized where we were going, I was a little less excited because we had been there many times before, but I was game. We had spent many anniversaries in the Shenandoah Valley, and they were all good, and this time I didn't have to do the planning; I just got in the car," she said.

They arrived at the hotel and slept immediately, because they had to take a road trip to reach their final destination. The woman was looking forward to spending some romantic time with her husband, but things turned out the opposite way. "We didn't hold hands much. He held my hand a few times, but when I reached in, he would pull away. He's never been very lovey-dovey. It would have been nice, but he had a packed lunch and was well prepared for the drive; no complaints," the woman wrote. When they reached the next hotel, the woman was surprised because it was the same place they'd sworn they would never visit again. However, she didn't react much because her husband said he was confused, and there weren't many available rooms to choose from.

She was disappointed that her husband hadn't put in enough effort to plan their trip, but she was trying her best to focus only on the brighter side. The second disappointment hit when it was time for dinner, and her husband hadn't even booked a reservation. In fact, he insisted his wife choose the place. After dinner, they went back to their room, and since the husband wanted something to eat, they decided to share the cheesecake they had brought with them. "I take a bite and tell him it's too rich; I don't want any more. He finishes his slice, and we do a quickie, and I go to sleep. Not ideal, but we are both tired. It was a long day," she recalled.

The next day, the woman woke up and wanted to relish her slice of cake for breakfast, but she couldn't find it. Her husband, who saw her struggling to find her slice of cake, chuckled and said, "I got hungry last night and ate the other one, but the one we started last night is still there." The woman was pissed; it was a tiny piece of cake that her husband had left for her. "I was done pretending I'm OK with crumbs. The crumbs in that empty to-go box felt in that moment like a symbol for what I get out of this marriage, his crumbs," she confessed. For 25 long years, she said, she had spent caring for her husband, his kids, his home, and even his finances, but in return, he couldn't even save her a slice of their anniversary cake.

"Like with everything in our life, I do the heavy lifting and get what's left. I have thanked him for giving me crumbs for our entire marriage. As I told him, I deserve someone who not only will not eat my cake but will protect it and keep anyone else from eating my cake. And I am done being grateful for crumbs," she said. So, it was really not only about the cake, but a lot of things that were evidently wrong in their marriage. When both partners don't put in equal effort into maintaining their relationship, in most cases, it leads to separation. In fact, a survey by UF IFAS (University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences), 69% of divorces are initiated by women. The reason? Just like the woman in the story, they are often expected to run the household and raise kids alone and without much support from their husbands. They also found that 66% of divorced men and 74% of women think their partners should have worked more to save their marriage.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Reddit post, u/chaserscarlet said, "The fact that he found it funny and ate your cake is worse than eating the cake, to be honest. I think you have felt underappreciated for 25 years, and you’re NTA for leaving a loveless marriage."

u/psychologicalnose197 shared, "When you mentioned he didn't have a dinner reservation, that was my first sign that he isn't good at planning. And if you weren't even sleeping together for months, then that's a sign this bond was broken... my only regret when I got my divorce was not ending it sooner. Don't waste your precious years on anyone. Take care of yourself."
