A woman (u/CarottesConfites) agreed to be exclusive with a man she had recently started seeing, hoping their relationship might eventually become serious. But soon, his behavior started raising red flags, even though he had promised to be exclusive. Suspicion hung in the air, but she didn’t succumb to it until a pattern in his text messages made her suspicious. When she met him head-on, he deflected the blame onto her by saying she was ruining their relationship. A little bit more snooping proved her hunches correct, and she ended up discovering a woman who identified herself as his girlfriend and was living with her. Her story, shared in an August 10, 2026 Reddit post, which has since amassed 8,000 upvotes, showed what can happen when two women compare notes about the same man.

Exclusive but suspicious

As they began discussing the possibility of a serious relationship, they agreed to be exclusive. But soon enough, little red flags started popping up, one being his text messages. He would constantly text and send her snaps while at work or the gym, but his messages almost completely stopped when he was home or on weekends. The pattern was a big enough hint for the woman to lose her nerve and go about snooping for his truth.

Blocked her everywhere

Instead of snooping, she confronted him. But instead of an explanation, she was met with manipulation and blame. He called her crazy and blocked her on social media accounts. “I must admit I cried my little eyes out over that,” the woman recounted. A few weeks passed, and he sent her another message on Messenger, while she was still blocked on other accounts. He apologized for his behaviour and suggested, “Maybe we could be Friends With Benefits?” One more time, she tried to get an explanation from him, but he responded angrily, saying things like, "I'm crazy, I'm imagining things, this is why I ruin my relationships, there's something wrong with me."

The other woman

This time, she decided to investigate for herself. Her suspicions were confirmed when she found another woman who identified herself as his girlfriend and said they had been practically living together. According to the woman’s description, she turned out to be a “really cool girl.” The two women spoke on the phone for more than an hour, sharing stories, laughing, and commiserating over the man. The girlfriend thanked the Redditor profusely for telling her the truth and said she planned to confront him that night.

Friends with benefits

Those who haven’t experienced it think that it’s rare, but those who have know that “Friends With Benefits (FWB)” is a sprawling relationship trend in America. Match, the world's largest relationship company, conducted the most comprehensive survey of 5,000 American singles and found that 27% of men actively seek out FWB. 73% of men said, "It just happens." Only 45% of the FWB relationships turned into a committed relationship. Her experience also reflects patterns researchers have associated with gaslighting in romantic relationships. A qualitative study of 65 people who identified as having experienced gaslighting found that perpetrators commonly accused partners of being “crazy,” overly emotional or overly sensitive, while also blaming them for problems that were not their fault. The researchers noted that gaslighting was often used to avoid accountability, including in cases involving infidelity, by denying a problem and making the partner question her own perceptions.

Meanwhile, the Reddit readers are pondering the situation of the girlfriend and what might have happened to her after she confronted the skittish man. “I feel like we should all send our collective good vibes to her,” said u/SunshineShoulders87. u/take0aa0pinch said, “I do love when both women can confront the cheater together, cause the expression that he makes would be priceless.”
