Woman paid $25 to find out if her Hinge match was married and posted it on Facebook. Within hours, she got a comment: 'Hi, I'm the wife'

Dating apps may have made it easier to meet someone new, but it also comes with challenges regarding honesty and transparency. Samantha (@samantha.talks) took to TikTok on October 7, 2024, to share how she found out Daniel, the man she met on Hinge, was "married." Back in September, she went on two dates with the man and found out he had been lying to her. Instead of leaving, she ignored the red flag. But after their third date, her "spidey senses" were tingling. She paid $25 for a background check on Daniel. She was not ready for what she discovered and never expected the response that followed. The video received 2.9 million views, 133,900 likes, and 2,471 comments.

'Work' in Arlington

Samantha had been talking to Daniel for a month before they went on their first date. From the get-go, he told her that he had been separated for two years and divorced for two. He was eager to take her out for a second date, but she wanted to take it slow. However, they met for drinks the following day. She joked about how he's 36, but found out he was actually 39, which was a red flag, but she ignored it. 

For their third date, she offered to come to Maryland, but he told her not to since she didn't have a car. She had a bus pass and could Uber, but he convinced her he'd pick her up and that he had a surprise. The surprise was that he was staying in DC for the night because he had work early in the morning in Arlington. After dinner, they went out for drinks, and Samantha ended up spending the night with him.

'Are we dating the same guy DC'

The following morning, Samantha thought about his reason for staying. "Where he lives in Maryland is like 30 minutes from me, and Arlington is like 20 minutes." She could not work out why he would spend money on a hotel rather than drive the extra 20 minutes. She deduced that the only reason why he didn't let her visit was that he had a wife. Desperate to know the truth, she paid $25 for a background check and found everything about Daniel, everything except the divorce papers.

She then took to Facebook and posted on the "Are we dating the same guy DC" group, and within a few hours, his wife commented, "I'm the wife. Call me." Samantha reached out to her and discovered that they were living together but were separated. He had allegedly cheated on her with several women, and she knew about his and Samantha's date. He even recapped it to her and said that Samantha was crazy and talkative.

Dirty little liars

People on dating apps may not always be 100% honest about their personal details. A Statista survey revealed that 21% lied about their age on their dating profiles, and 14% were not transparent about their income, hobbies, and interests. 12% lied about their height. Samantha saw the red flag the moment he told her he was lying about his age on Hinge, but refused to accept it. Additionally, a 2017 YouGov survey also discovered that people lie to their partners all the time. 49% admitted doing it more than once, and 41% said they had only lied to their partners once.

Love bombing is real

People were stunned by how Samantha's story unfolded. @brittanyspraggshargrove commented, "At least you believed her. One of the girls I tried to tell when my ex-husband was cheating on me (while pregnant with our 3rd child) didn’t believe me, and they ran away together." @the_og_valpal wrote, "Totally understand feeling jaded and needing time away from the dating scene! But important to remember that you did pick up when he was acting suspicious and your hunches were right."
