Some people create a scene anywhere, and one woman's three-hour crying session on a plane went viral. Tomiko Harvey (@tomiko.harvey) was on a 10-hour flight from Istanbul to DC. She flew from Kazakhstan to the U.S. via Turkish Airlines after her father passed away. She specifically chose the aisle seat so she wouldn't bother anyone when she went to the bathroom. But the passenger next to her asked to switch seats with her husband, who sat two rows in front of them in the middle seat. When Harvey refused, the woman started the waterworks. The story drew fresh attention after Inside Edition revisited Harvey’s experience on October 21, 2026, and drew over 277,000 views. Harvey said the woman cried for about three hours after she refused to give up her aisle seat so the passenger could sit beside her husband.

Three-hour crying sesh

Tomiko Harvey explained that she refused to switch seats with the woman's husband just because she missed him. She wrote in the caption, "The ultimate white tears on a long haul flight from Istanbul to DC." After Harvey denied the woman's request, she cried for three hours. At first, Harvey thought something bad happened and asked if someone had died. She didn't understand why the woman would cry for three hours, but Harvey was floored by the woman's response.

Apparently, she "just missed her husband and whose shoulder would she lay her head on," Harvey wrote. "Her husband was two rows up in a middle seat with his headphones on, sleeping in heavenly peace the entire flight." The Instagram video was shared on October 9, 2026, and it racked up 4.9 million views, over 95,800 likes, and 15,500 comments.

Pay for the seat you want

Finally, when the flight landed, Harvey told the woman, "Good job. Look at you surviving without your husband for 10 hours." On a humorous note, she added, "Now I need to reevaluate my marriage because I clearly do not love my husband enough." On October 21, Harvey posted another video to explain her refusal to swap seats. "I will die on this hill. I am not switching my airline seat. I don't care if you're a kid."

She recalled the entire incident again and said, "People saying I was mean, I need to have empathy. How about you buy the seat that you want, and then nobody will have to have empathy for you. Let's try that." She concluded, "If you don't want to have a seat assigned to you, you need to purchase your seat, which is what I did. I'm not giving up my seat that I paid money for so that you could be comfortable."

Picky seaters

When people pay for a seat on a plane, they chose it for a reason. A photoAiD survey revealed that 42.2% and 53.2% said their seat is "extremely" and "very" important, respectively, when booking a flight. Respondents were also asked how they felt when asked to swap seats. 30.3% said they were sympathetic, 23.3% were confused, 22.7% were accomodating, 20.6% were resentful, 20.5% were pressured, and 13.8% were annoyed. Additionally, a YouGov survey found that 75% were willing to switch seats with someone who wanted to sit next to a younger family member, 72% would do it for a better seat, and 66% would switch with someone who wanted to sit next to their partner. Unfortunately for the woman, Harvey was not willing to switch just because she wanted to be next to her husband. But looking at it from Harvey's perspective, she chose the aisle seat for a reason.

Husband's not negotiating

Netizens in the comment section had mixed opinions about Harvey's post. Some asked why she made it into a race issue, while the majority agreed she did not have to move. @rick_ontherun wrote, "Husband ain’t look back once, huh?" @seekwisdompcw asked, "Why was her husband not up there negotiating with his seat mates?"
