'These days, the idea of devotion is a rare and increasingly precious thing.'
While in New York and separated from her husband, Jony Lee received weekly letters from him — a plan they had agreed on before he left. He had given all the letters to her boss to distribute, one per week, so she’d have a small reminder of him during their time apart. In a recent video posted to her Instagram @jonymlee, Lee described that when she was about to sit on the bed, she felt something under the sheets, and found one of those letters.
As she began to open the envelope and look inside, she noticed that there were two messages. She hesitated and read the outside of each one, trying to decide which to open first. As she peeked into the letters, she realized the second one was from her grandmother. "I could tell from the writing straight away," she said, and immediately broke down into tears. "I haven't even read it yet," she added, tears rolling down her face. She hadn’t expected a letter from anyone else, and the surprise clearly shook her. Lee chose to open her husband’s note first. Inside, he’d included a calendar marking the date he planned to visit her soon, a reassurance in the middle of a difficult stretch apart.
Holding the letter, Lee became overwhelmed, and her emotions caught up to her. "I’m so in love with this man, it’s crazy. And I’m so lucky to be married to my best friend. Why is he like…," she said, crying and speechless. Though the moment may seem simple, research shows it has real weight. In a large-scale study published in the Journal of Family Issues involving 2,235 relationship education participants, researchers found that everyday affectionate behaviors, like leaving notes, showing up with small surprises, or saying "I love you" in a way a partner values, significantly improve relationship satisfaction. These gestures work not through grand declarations, but by steadily reinforcing commitment and emotional safety.
Viewers, awestruck by the love and devotion of the husband, expressed their thoughts in the comments. @chaotikraccoon wrote, "I hope this kind of love finds me. So happy for you both." @christopher_tremper commented, "So good to see someone appreciate someone who is special. These days, the idea of devotion is a rare and increasingly precious thing. I don’t know who you are at all, but I am happy for you both." @shngrclprd said, "Aww.. This is so beautiful. There’s something so special about letters. So personal and real." @jinxi_chenjeans added, "I was waiting for you to read some parts of the card! Curiosity gets the best of me." @andreaavjimenez joked, "Ok, but why is this on my fyp, not my husband’s?"
@annedungle chimed in, "IF HE WANTED TO, HE WOULD. This is my standard now." @c1ipp3dbytyty pointed out, "This is proof that it really is just easy! You just need to have love and patience." @christie_anneee shared her own story, "Crying sis. I left the state for a week, and then went to Asia for almost a month, so my boyfriend wrote about 40 pages of letters in a notebook with the date to read them, so I could read one every morning. Right here with you!!!"
