Her response not only addressed her neighbors' concerns but also sweetened the deal when it came to her walnut tree.
It's common for people to voice complaints about things that annoy them, whether it's messy yards or, in this case, a walnut tree shedding free walnuts. Laura Brikmanis (u/brik42 on Reddit) recently shared on the platform how she responded to her neighbors' walnut tree grumbles with a touch of humor. Her creative solution quickly went viral, with Reddit users loving her approach.
Brikmanis put up a sign that read, "Beware of falling walnuts. Also... free walnuts." She wrote in the caption, "My neighbors were complaining." The woman has lived in a small purple house for eight years, according to Newsweek. Her neighborhood is filled with big and old trees. "The trees offer great habitat for all sorts of wildlife, especially birds and wonderful shade, which keeps my utility costs low too," Brikmanis told the outlet. Her old walnut tree is one such old tree in the neighborhood and stands at 100 feet. "Around this time of year, the walnut bombing begins. I have a metal roof, and they sound like gunshots when they fall, and they ricochet off my roof at surprising and dangerous angles," Brikmanis explained.
"My windshield and my neighbors' windshield were both sacrificed," Brikmanis revealed. "As an added bonus, the squirrels take the nuts back up into the tree and gnaw them apart, raining down walnut bits that stain everything and dry into sharp, hurtful pieces. Several of my neighbors have been good-naturedly urging me to remove the tree. I did have someone come out, but he barely took a branch down before he realized the job was too complicated. There are a lot of power and cable lines, and the tree is super close to my house and my neighbors." Soon enough the lady also realized that it would be costly to chop down the tree and she didn't have that kind of money.
So the woman put up a funny sign to sweeten the deal. "So far, I have had positive feedback, although no one seems to be collecting free walnuts yet," Brikmanis joked. "This beautiful tree has been here for probably a century. Sure, she is big and overbearing, but the benefits to the wildlife and environment outweigh the nuisance of falling walnuts. And have you seen the cost of walnuts these days? They are a pain to process but pretty cool that they just fall into my lap." People took to the comments section to share their own experiences and appreciate the idea.
u/kronictopic wrote, "My wife would see that and scold me. She'd know I'd be in there looking for walnuts to grow my own tree." Brikmanis responded by suggesting that the person should grow that tree as far from their house as possible. u/FunkyOnionPeel commented, "It's a real hazard! Used to have some massive walnut trees and those things would leave craters in the ground! We used to joke that you need a hard hat to go down to the woods." u/Domestic_Supply remarked, "I was sitting under a walnut tree at work and the squirrels threw walnuts at me and screamed until I left. Little jerks."
