Woman comes home from surgery expecting support—husband's first words make her question everything

A woman recovering from surgery was shocked when her husband’s concern wasn’t her health, but his laundry.

It might be normal to share concerns about things happening in the house with family members, but there’s an appropriate time and place to discuss them. After someone has had surgery is certainly not a good time. A woman decided she wouldn’t do her husband's laundry anymore after he complained about his football t-shirts getting "ruined" just after she came home from surgery. The wife, u/i_hate_my_username4, shared the incident with the internet.

The woman had gallbladder removal surgery, during which one large stone and several smaller ones were removed. The surgery went well, but as the anesthesia wore off, she struggled to get home. "The doctor said it was quite normal to feel very tired and groggy afterward. I was lucky enough to have my surgery in a private hospital funded by the NHS, so my staff was great but I still couldn't wait to get home to see my children and sit on my own sofa, in my own house and watch my own TV," the woman shared. She was tired when she finally got home and the morphine had worn off significantly. "I haven't had any more pain relief, so I just want to sit down and relax and take some codeine and give my kids a cuddle."

When the woman walked into the house, it was really messy, but her husband had arranged cushions for her on the sofa. She also understood that caring for three kids can be hard, so she didn't say anything. She wrote, "I had barely sat down five minutes when my husband turns to me and says, 'Oh, I don't mean to have a go at you since you just got home from surgery but can you please STOP putting my football t-shirts in the dryer since it ruins them, I've told you before they can't go in there!'" The woman was quite taken aback that her husband would bring up such a thing just after she had come home from the hospital.

"No, 'Do you need anything? Do you need any medication? Are you comfortable?' Nah, just 'my t-shirts!'" the woman recounted. The wife didn't remember putting the T-shirts in the dryer, so she just said sorry. "I genuinely thought his football t-shirts were ok to go in the dryer. I absolutely swear I remember him saying last year that they could go in and I'm usually pretty good about remembering what can be tumble-dried and what can't." On the other hand, the husband had ruined their daughter's school cardigan and hadn't replaced it even after six months. "I was like, you know what? Do your own laundry, then if anything gets damaged, that's on you. Don't have your stuff ready for work? That's your problem. And don't ever bother asking me to iron anything either." But later on, she wondered if it was a petty thing to do because she was a stay-at-home mom and her husband worked the entire week.

People took to the comments section to support the woman. u/friendlily wrote, "Oh, he can do his own laundry because he's an adult." u/apothekryptic commented, "Your husband picked the WRONG time to bring this up and his delivery was garbage. You should be concerned that his biggest concern in your most vulnerable moment is his t-shirts." u/Sufficient_Dish2350 remarked, "The timing and his approach were way off. It’s like he totally missed the point of you being in recovery. He could’ve waited until you were feeling better to discuss laundry issues!"
