For some, one of the best things about certain restaurants is the free bread and chips they offer while one waits for their meal. The complimentary item, as simple as it may be, offers satisfaction to hungry customers and works as a delightful perk. However, a woman named Crystal (@cowgirl.crystal) shared that there’s a peculiar reason behind some establishments offering these items. Crystal’s opinion was quite a shocker to many and caused an interesting debate on the matter. “Have you ever wondered why restaurants serve you bread and chips before dinner?” the woman asked.

The woman busted a common belief that customers receive the same so that they subconsciously fill their tummies. However, Crystal mentioned that this was not the case. She added, “It’s not because they’re being generous or something. It’s because you will spend more money.” Elaborating on her claim, Crystal mentioned that there’s a biological reason behind the same. She explained that restaurants use a strategy of getting customers to eat the bread or chips while they're browsing the menu. “It causes a glucose spike that makes you more hungry,” she revealed. The woman’s idea revolved around the fact that the hunger caused by the complimentary items would cause customers to order more or heavier dishes priced at higher rates.

She added that the same ideology is used to add dessert in the picture. “They give you more bread and chips and then bring out the dessert menu,” the woman explained. Crystal suggested ignoring the bread and chips to avoid this dilemma and instead snacking on something simpler if one wishes to. She suggested taking in fiber instead of glucose-filled products to help cut down the hunger element. “Get some veggies, maybe zucchini or even fried pickles are a great start,” she mentioned. Though Crystal had a noteworthy opinion, several customers were far too comfortable with the idea of snacking on bread first.

Many mentioned that they'd rather have the chips or bread and spend, than otherwise. @linda1710 mentioned, “No. I’ll eat the bread because I’m starving. I’ll bring half the meal home and a full dessert.” @michelleedwardswhite shared another perspective, “Except I don’t. I feel more full with bread or chips and order less when I have them. If I don’t touch them, I order more.” @kh7803 added, “I must be the opposite because I fill up more with the breadsticks.”

@zaney73 remarked, “I fill up on the bread and then order a soup instead of a whole meal.” @drunkenmonkey23 wrote, “I never get dessert because I get full and bring half my meal home so they’re not making money out of me.” @jeremycook4858 shared another opinion, “I will overeat regardless. I will eat bread, chips and other foods.” @oleblueyes0 said, “Maybe that’s their intent but the amount of bread and chips I eat never impacts my hunger.” @hans408sc agreed, “I usually don’t eat the bread or chips so I won’t be full before my meal.” @angiemae5131 mentioned, “It’s to distract you from the time it takes for the meal to arrive.”
