To no one’s surprise, every now and then we come across bizarre proposal stories. But one couple pushed the envelope by drawing attention from some uninvited guests. A 29-year-old man, wanting to live happily ever after with his girlfriend, planned a spookily special way to propose to her. The highly anticipated moment turned out to be a nightmare for the boyfriend after the cops showed up at his place instead of the love of his life, who goes by u/ThrowRA-Broccoli on Reddit.

The woman decided to take the matter to social media as she felt her partner was still upset with her. Before diving into the story, she began explaining that the couple moved in together after two weeks of their seven-year-old relationship. With time, their bond had become stronger and the duo were dog and cat parents; they opened a joint bank account and also had one big “happily” tribe of mutual friends.

Having shared this, the girlfriend explained her only dilemma: that she did not wish to get married. Like people around her, the woman, aged 27, wrote: “I don't need a ring, a ceremony, or a piece of paper to commit my life to the one person I love above all others. I am his, wholly and completely. That’s not to say I’m against marriage, because I’m not, but getting a ring on my finger is not a priority for me.” Yet, she revealed her ideal wedding would be a small gathering with the couple’s parents, extended family, and an officiant performing the service “barefoot on a beach.”

In July 2024, according to the woman’s post, her boyfriend was “acting cagey.” As a person who cannot keep things under wraps, she had an instinct that her man was holding a secret. Moreover, she felt like he would throw a usual weekend getaway due to the woman’s highly pressurized job schedule. Bingo! The girlfriend reached home one fine night with their door wide open and the house completely submerged in darkness—mind you, no less than a horror movie.

“I arrived home from work, and his car wasn't in the driveway, and the front door was wide open. I sat in the street, watching the house for a couple of minutes. There was no movement, no lights in the windows, nothing. I called my boyfriend four times—no answer. That wasn’t like him. One missed call? Sure. Four missed calls? No way! She called the cops. The law enforcement arrived on the scene and started their inspection.

After a few minutes, the woman was advised to go back into the house. “They led me through the house to the back patio. I had flipped the lights on as I entered and saw that a trail of rose petals led right out the back,” she claimed. The boyfriend, dressed to impress, was sitting there, wearing a tuxedo and handcuffed. Additionally, a “beautiful” dinner was organized, but it goes without saying that, as per the girlfriend, she ruined the proposal.

Notably, things are not as good as before between the happy couple. The woman now claims that she misunderstood the setup, but the boyfriend thinks otherwise. “He instead believes that I called the police because I anticipated his proposal. He thinks I don't want to marry him, and rather than expressing this directly, I devised a way to avoid the commitment,” she added. The marriage-averse remembered an anecdote when the couple had their first anniversary of being together.

According to the woman, she had a “half-ass conversation” where she had asked her boyfriend to “surprise her” upon being asked about her marriage plans. Following the recent incident, the disgruntled boyfriend rushed to his parents’ house. She elaborates, “He came home an hour later because they (the parents) thought it was hilarious. Everyone he tells finds it funny, and he is the one sharing the story.” The helpless girlfriend decided to seek help online by asking Reddit what she could do to fix this.

Among them, u/StarRevolt sympathized with the girlfriend and wrote, “Yeah, this sounds like a horror movie. He isn't the sharpest tool in the shed.” Adding to it, u/AnxietyQueeeeen remarked, “He could have answered and said, 'Oh yeah, I’m in the backyard; I must have left the door open by accident.' His ego was hurt because there’s no way he really thinks she called the cops because she doesn’t want to marry him.” “This shouldn’t make me laugh, but the whole situation does—on the inside. It’s not a good idea to laugh about it out loud right now,” the girlfriend commented after finding overwhelming support online.
