Woman ended 10-year relationship after fiancé told her to lose 50 pounds before wedding — when he revealed his weight, the podcaster called him out

Visual appearances are aesthetic to the eye, but love surely is beyond what remains visible. Love doesn’t judge appearances but rather enhances them. But a man was foolish enough not to understand that and to judge his fiancée by her weight. In a June 8 episode of Better Convos (@better_convos), the man revealed to the host, Derrick Jaxn (@derrickjaxn), that he insisted that his partner of 10 years lose 50 pounds as a requirement for their wedding. The man had reached out to Jaxn with the hope that he could help him get her back, but Jaxn clapped back at him with a bang-on response.

The stigma of weight

The man started by explaining that his partner called off the wedding because he asked her to lose about 40 to 50 pounds for the wedding. He revealed that his partner was 135 pounds when he first met her, but now she is around 180. Quite shamelessly, he revealed that he himself weighed 200 pounds, but he didn’t want his wife to match that. “I am just not into that,” he told Jaxn. When asked about kids, he said they have two kids aged seven and three, not realizing that the woman could have gained weight due to these pregnancies.

The man would have thought that Jaxn would support him in getting his wife back, but the host cringed at his words. “So, in reality, you didn’t just ask her to lose the weight. You made her lose the weight kind of like an ultimatum for you to even go through with the marriage, even after ten years of her waiting for you to propose, right?” Jaxn said. While Jaxn frowned, the man continued his rambling. Men, he said, are visual creatures, and therefore, he needed his wife to look good for him. He excused his demand by saying that he wanted his wife to be healthy.

He was her greatest weight

Jaxn snapped back at him with a brutally honest response by saying that if he really cared about her health, he would have started with her mental health. He explained that she might have been gaining weight due to him, the pregnancies, depression, and stress, and he was making childish demands just for his aesthetic preferences. “I say she did herself a favor. I’m not helping you get her back at all,” Jaxn asserted. He turned to the screen to commend the woman for calling off the wedding. “Your ex told you to lose 40-50 pounds, and you overachieved by losing 200 pounds of his dumb-a**,” he told the man’s ex-partner.

Lure of appearances

Despite all the gender equality buzz, many men still judge women solely based on their physical appearance. A study by YouGov indicated that men are more likely to have preferences for women’s physical appearance than women are, precisely 22%. 40% of surveyed men said they are more attracted to slimmer women, and 22% said they prefer partners who are slimmer than they are. These men, it seems, lack the understanding that there can be several different drivers of weight gain in women during their midlife.

A study published in Current Opinion in Endocrine and Metabolic Research listed a few of them, including psychological stress, medication use, surgical procedures, and physiological, lifestyle, and genetic factors. In these cases, it is not easier for the woman to lose weight, which makes demands like these stressful for them.

In comments, many people declared that he was the greatest weight she was burdened with, and now, after leaving him, the woman would rather be much happier and lighter. @double_dd84 said, “Oh… she's gonna lose weight now and I love that for her. He was a burden.” @richashivaya commented, “He was not in love with her.”
