Moore bought a gift on her grandma’s behalf, so she doesn't feel disappointed about not getting her anything.
A grandmother and granddaughter are often mirrors of one another in different times and spaces. Their inexplicable bond is developed over their similar interests and support for one another, wherein she can not only be your greatest confidante but also your partner in crime. However, the short-lived nature of the bond transforms drastically within its lifespan due to ageing and ailments. Sabrina Corrin Moore — who goes by the username @sabrinacorrinx on TikTok — shared a snippet of her bond with her grandma in a video. Although the lady suffers from dementia, their exchanges are beyond heartwarming.
Moore’s video begins with her unlocking a door and greeting her grandma, “Hello grandma. Are you okay?” She walks into a room where she sees Grandma sitting on the sofa, looking “cozy." Upon seeing her, the old lady's face lights up, and she immediately offers her food, trying to make her comfortable. Moore tells her that she shopped “a little bit” and came by to see her since she was on holiday with her girls “for [her] 30th birthday”.
“Oh, I wish I knew,” exclaims grandma, replying to which Moore asks, “Would you have come?” After receiving an adorable reply and a doubt regarding the date of the special day, Mooreclarifies that her birthday is “not until Wednesday.” The stirring part is yet to come — Moore bought a gift on her grandma’s behalf, so she doesn't feel disappointed about not getting her anything, and mentions that she saw it in the other room.
The second half of the video reflects on their beautiful bond when Moore tells her grandma that she won't have a birthday party. Instead, she will only go out with her friends and then come back to have lunch with her. Thrilled, she immediately exclaims, “Oh, my treat!” Moore asks her where she’d like to go, and they decide on the “Garden Centre again,” laughing about how they were good customers the last time and will continue their streak.
According to a 2022 study by Ellen A. Kramarow, “4% of adults age 65 and older reported ever having received a dementia diagnosis,” with diagnosis being “similar for men (3.8%) and women (4.2%).” For adults, the diagnosis “increased with age, from 1.7% in those ages 65–74 to 13.1% in those age 85 and older, and decreased with rising education level, from 7.9% in adults age 65 and older with less than a high school diploma to 2.2% in those with a college degree or higher.”
An article by Home Instead suggests a few tips that can help us care for a family member with dementia at home. They advise us to be patient and understanding towards the one suffering. “Following their lead” can be helpful as “enabling them to do the things they wish to do on that day, even if it is ‘out of their norm,’ ensures that they continue to enjoy their hobbies and interests as much as possible.” Further, communicating with them about their comfort, likes, and needs is a great way to make them feel at ease.
After watching the emotional video, many people commented their hearts out. @lizzielizardss joked, “‘It's nice and cozy in here,’ I know you meant it's hotter than the depths of he** and I love you and her,” while @nicoleruffles expressed, “Your thought process is beautiful, [you’re] so lucky to have each other.” @amy_alexandra_ wrote, “‘Oh my treat,’ my heart,” and @viccigreenaway quoted grandma’s adorable words, “‘Oh yes, I do remember buying you something.’”
