'The beautiful and incredibly heartbreaking illustration of his death equaling life for me.'
Organ donations are often sentimental. When it comes to more vital organs, there is a heartbreaking reality about the donor due to which another receives life in some form. A woman named Molly (@cheeseballchick) had received a heart valve donation from a stranger, with no idea who the person was, but later received a letter about her donor. It had heart-wrenching truths that revealed how she managed to receive the heart valve, and she couldn't stop thinking about the stranger's sad reality. Her narrative is a bittersweet experience, holding the pricelessness of humanity.
According to Organ Donor, around 103,223 people are on a national waitlist for an organ donation. Where time is crucial, there is hope for these people only because kind strangers opt to become donors. In tears, Molly revealed the contents of her donor's letter. “27 years, male. Cause of death: Sudden cardiac arrest. Date of dissection: April 29th, 2024. And I have this guy’s valve inside of me,” she said, holding her chest. She felt “thankful and overwhelmed” at the same time. One can imagine what a profound feeling it is to know that your life was saved, but at the cost of another — especially such a young one. It's humbling to know that you've survived because of a total stranger, whose family, in their grief, chose to make a way to save another life.
Looking through the details of her donor, Molly got emotional and decided to dial the number of her donor's family. “I feel weighty. Overwhelmed. Grateful. Humbled. Honored. Happy. Sad,” she wrote in her caption. It opened the door for so much curiosity about the donor. “Was he married? Was he a father? What did he do for work? What was his personality like? Do we have any interests or hobbies in common? Where is he from?” Molly wondered. When she thought about his death, then too, she had questions filling up her mind.
“Did he have any indication that he had any health issues? How did his family find out he died? How are they doing over a year after his death?” she thought to herself. She broke down on call with the staff and later learned that she could write a letter to the family. Molly was unsure about what she would write. No words could express how she felt or how the family had been feeling. “Will they be excited to receive a letter from me? What should I write? Will they write me back?” she contemplated. The entire reality of a procedure as such was eye-opening on a different level.
“I can't help but see the beautiful and incredibly heartbreaking illustration of his death equaling life for me,” Molly remarked. She connected to her faith and mentioned how she had newfound enlightenment about the idea of surrendering and believing. “Even as I'm typing this, tears are welling up as I think about the sacred privilege of having part of his heart in mine. Wow. Lots of big feelings,” Molly continued. As tears rolled down her face, she noted that she would love for the family to be in touch, but she would definitely do her part first in thanking them for another chance at life. @saksannie wrote, “I’m glad he gave you life. The emotional journey must be hard.” @ladymorado said, “What an amazing act of love.”
