Woman boots best friend, boyfriend over ‘proposal stunt’ at her engagement party, asks if she overreacted

Even after she asked them to leave, her friends didn't realize that they were inappropriately stealing the spotlight from the soon-to-be bride.

There is a right time and place for everything. Weddings, for instance, are supposed to be a special occasion for the bride and groom. While the bridesmaids, groomsmen, and all the guests are heartily welcomed, it is not appropriate for them to try to be the center of attention on someone else’s D-day. One soon-to-be bride, who recently hosted her engagement party, was left fuming when one of her friends used this occasion to propose to his girlfriend, thereby stealing the spotlight from her. The 26-year-old woman, who goes by u/Significant_Lab_5177, went on Reddit to ask people whether she “overreacted.”

The woman described that the weekend engagement party was organized after her 27-year-old fiancé, Jake, proposed to her the previous month. Her best friend, Lisa, had offered to help plan the party at “a rooftop bar- super chill, just close friends and [family].” She recalled that the party was going perfectly until something happened that left her hot under the collar. During the toast midway through the night, Lisa’s boyfriend, Mark, grabbed the mic.

“I thought he was gonna say congrats or whatever, but he starts this whole speech about how ‘love is in the air’ and suddenly drops to one knee ‘in front of Lisa.’ Everyone starts screaming, phones out, the whole thing. Lisa’s crying, nodding yes, and the crowd goes wild,” described the woman. All the while, she said, she stood with her glass of champagne, feeling utter disbelief. “This is ‘my’ engagement party,” she wondered while Jake awkwardly patted her back. Once the clapping died out, the woman turned to Mark and said, “Dude, seriously? You couldn’t pick literally any other day?” He shrugged and said, “Come on, it’s not like you guys need the spotlight all night.”

At this point, she “lost it” and asked the couple to leave the party. They left, but then the woman started receiving condescending messages from her friends who told her she “should’ve been happy for them.” “Lisa texted me, ‘You ruined what was supposed to be the happiest moment of my life.' But like…Hello? This was ‘my’ moment,” she wrote. While her mom said her response was justified, her brother said she acted “jealous and petty.”

Thousands of Reddit users upvoted her post, and many quickly pointed out that she did the right thing, given that Mark and Lisa piggybacked one of the most special events of her life. “The friends that say you overreacted; yeah, those are Lisa’s friends,” said u/Grandmapatty64. u/frostypookiee ranted, “Why do people feel the need to steal someone else's day and think they're in the right?”

u/halchemy also reflected, “That is insane behavior, and they didn’t even try to ask beforehand if that would be okay with you. It is common knowledge that an engagement party, wedding, etc, is not an appropriate place for a proposal.” u/Vampyroguee called Mark out saying, “Your engagement party, your rules. And seriously, proposing at someone else's engagement party? That's a big no-no. Mark needs to learn some basic etiquette.”
