'Keep the cash, and my DSLR, and whatever else you took. But...'
A woman who'd lost almost all her valuables didn't care about anything other than the photos of her beloved dog, who had died. The burglary victim appealed to the robber who broke into her house to keep everything he had stolen except for the memory card, per 7 News. "It has photos of my dog’s last day alive on it. I cannot replace those photos," she wrote, requesting him to return her priceless possession.
The woman, a Canadian writer, didn't care about the cash, her DSLR, or everything else that was stolen, except her dog's memories. "Please throw it onto the porch or put it in the mail slot," she wrote, pleading with the burglar to return the camera's memory card. The woman who had lost her beloved pet a few days prior to the robbery wrote that she couldn't afford to lose her photos, as those memories made her feel closer to her dog. The death of a pet can be very stressful for owners; in fact, it can lead to mental health issues like anxiety. In a survey, YouGov found that 88% of American pet parents consider their pets to be members of their family. Now, this means losing their pet would feel like losing a family member to them. The Toronto woman was also very close to her dog, which proves why she was more worried about losing her pictures than anything else.
Meanwhile, the story struck a deep emotional chord in people who had gone through a similar experience. Echoing the sentiments, @kess_ej8 commented, "My house was broken into; they stole a lot of stuff, but the thing that matters the most was my cat's ashes they took from me! I had her for 21 years before she passed away… It's the biggest loss I still feel to this day; that happened about 10 years ago." @ohbaudelaire recalled, "My father was robbed, and they took his laptop. We didn’t know why he was so upset about it since he was never materialistic. Later, he told us he had over 200 poems written by him and kept them a secret to surprise us eventually. He passed away two months later, and we will never read them."
Another user who goes by @luckygirlhannah said, "This happened to me. My cat died, and the vet made me a little clay paw print with her paw on it. She was so tiny, she fit into a small box with her favorite toy and some little sweet notes from the vet. I was so hysterical about losing her that I forgot it in my car. That night, my car got robbed; they stole my money and some of my jewelry, but I didn’t care. What hurt was that they stole her paw and her favorite toy in that little box. It was all I had of my baby. I called the cops, and my boyfriend and one very nice officer walked around the neighborhood and its surroundings until they found it. They asked me if I wanted to use the box to find fingerprints and press charges; I said no. I didn’t care who did it; I just wanted my baby back. And I couldn’t have her, so I got the next best thing: her toy and her paw print back."
