The woman says that the roommate was not taking care of the dog which made it difficult for the other roommates to share the space with her.
Family pets often hold a special place in people's hearts, which made it especially difficult for Reddit user u/Head_Diet_9674 to ask her roommate to remove her family dog. Frustrated with the situation, she turned to Reddit to question whether she was in the wrong. "One of my roommates, let's call her Patty, brought her family’s dog into our college apartment where four of us live," she explained. The dog was only supposed to stay temporarily, but that short stay has turned into an indefinite one.
She explained that the dog had "severe anxiety," and Patty told the leasing company it was her "emotional support animal." However, the dog has caused significant issues in the apartment. "Our roommate has never touched our vacuum and this dog sheds like a sheep being sheared," she wrote. She also noted that the dog was not getting his energy out.
The roommates were still managing until something happened over the summer, which was the straw that broke the camel's back. She mentioned that none of her roommates stayed at the apartment over the summer, so she decided to "check in on the place" and move some of her things back up. She was shocked to discover that somebody was staying there and sleeping on her other roommate Sam's bed. To clear her suspicions, she asked Sam if she had been to the apartment over summer break. When Sam confronted them both, the dog-sitter claimed that "she had been permitted by Patty to use the bed," whereas Patty said that "she never told her to use her space."
Lastly, she mentioned that she does realize that the request that they are making is a hard one, but it feels like they are not left with much choice. "I feel as though we need a break from having the dog at our apartment. Between being stuck with a dog for months longer than we expected to having personal space violations, we feel like we need to work on the basics of communication and responsibility as roommates before reintroducing any animals," she wrote before asking the readers if they felt that what she did was wrong.
Many took to the comment section to give their opinions. u/Zamastyle mentioned that the dog is not the problem, they said, "It's the roommate. I find it interesting that your roommate needs an emotional support animal but also feels fine to take vacations without said support animal." Adding to it, u/introspectiveliar wrote, "I would keep the dog and kick the roommate out. She is a horrible roommate." Many also talked about how the dog did not seem to be a service animal, "NTA. The dog is not a service animal and you should not have to put up with her behavior and her dog," wrote u/Hodlking4.
