The woman who recently moved into a home in California had no idea how to turn off the overhead light in her kitchen. Then, she figured out what it was.
When people move into rental homes, they often stumble upon forgotten belongings from the families that lived there before them. At times, certain features in those homes can spook people too. Imagine if the lights in your home started turning on and off by itself. One woman from Sacramento, California, was left confused when she kept trying to turn off the overhead light at her new home but failed to do so. The woman named Divya, who goes by @mojojojokes on TikTok, shared her experience in a video with the community after she made an interesting discovery at her new rental home.
"We just moved into this house and all day yesterday, we couldn't figure out how to turn this light off," Divya explained in her video, giving viewers a glimpse of the said overhead light in her kitchen. However, Divya had chores to do and errands to run after moving into the new house so she decided to ignore the light for the time being. But at one point, she returned home to see that the troublesome light had turned off on its own. "So we left to run errands and when we came back the light was off and we were like, what the hell," she continued, adding that she wondered if the light was operating on some sort of timer.
"Why would the timer go off at night?" Divya further wondered in her video until she figured out how the light was going on and off on its own. She took a closer look to understand that the dome-shaped light on the ceiling of her kitchen was a skylight and it was solar powered. She went outside her home to give viewers a look at a dome on the roof of the house. It was an inlet through which the light in the kitchen would glow. Fellow TikTok users further enlightened Divya about it being a solar tube. According to Forbes, the outer end of a solar tube light is usually sealed with a weather-proof plastic dome and the interior-facing end is a porthole-style diffuser that directs the light into your home or business.

We have one and people are always trying to figure out how to turn it off." @celseywithac joked, "I believed you! We had these in a few rooms in our house in Arizona and when I tell you it took me a week to figure out what the hell was going on." @thnksbutnothnks suggested, "If the light is too intense (those things can be surprisingly bright!), stained glass stickers look cool on them and dim it a bit and it looks like you have a cool stained glass ceiling light." @deaunnd added, "My friend has a skylight like that in her bathroom. She is redoing it and wanted can light put in. The electricians said the one light seemed like enough."
