Cancer patient divorced husband so she could 'leave first.' He felt bad about denying her a second chance — until her coffee hit his face

A person can do everything right in a marriage, hold down the fort, take on every chore, and offer unconditional love when life falls apart and still watch their spouse walk away. This was the harsh reality faced by a man (u/ThrowRA8424209) who dedicated himself to supporting his college sweetheart, Anna, during her breast cancer treatment. Despite his efforts, she left him and later did something unexpected. Another user (u/Direct-Caterpillar77) shared this story on July 21, 2026, after the original post was deleted. Since then, it has received over 9,500 upvotes and more than 700 comments.

A roller-coaster

The story started when the couple met during the freshman year of university and got married right after Anna graduated. Initially, they enjoyed married life until one day Anna discovered a lump in her right breast. Given her family history of cancer, they knew what was coming, and they were right, and she was diagnosed with breast cancer. However, the good news was that it was treatable, but due to her background, the doctor recommended a double mastectomy. This plunged her into a dark place, but she refused therapy. Meanwhile, her husband stepped up entirely by taking time off work, doing all the household chores, and even giving her foot massages every night.

Sudden separation 

Nonetheless, about six weeks into the treatment, Anna went to stay with her sister Sarah for a week to give her husband some much-needed rest. Well, at least that's what he thought at the time. Just nights into her visit, Anna called him and demanded a divorce out of nowhere. She explained that she'd seen posts about men abandoning their sick wives and that "she was determined to leave me before I could leave her." Even though her husband begged her to stay and offered couples therapy, she'd made up her mind. She insisted that she was a woman and he was a man and therefore they should get separated. 

Fresh start and unexpected encounter

So, they did split up over a lengthy process that took roughly a year. After this, the couple sold their home and divided the proceeds evenly. Desperate for a fresh start, the man transferred his job and relocated to a town two hours away. Over the next couple of years, he quietly rebuilt his life by adopting a dog, picking up hiking and other hobbies. He even began to date again, slowly. However, things turned upside down when Anna called him three weeks after spotting him during a trip with friends. She claimed that her past actions were caused by being "sick and out of her mind," and begged for a second chance. 

Hard truths at a cafe

Anna suggested that they meet at least one more time, and, after much deliberation, the man agreed. They met at a local coffee shop where the man explained how deeply her gestures affected him. He revealed his deep loss of trust, while Anna revealed that she had left him under the influence of social media groups. She felt she "had to go through with it to be seen as a strong woman." This was enough for the man, as even though Anna pushed him to get back together, he refused. He clearly stated that he couldn't get back together because he no longer trusted her. His resolve strengthened when, as he stood up to leave, she threw coffee in his face.

Chronic illness increases risks

Well, even though what happened with this couple was terrible, divorce after a chronic illness unfortunately isn't rare. According to a survey held by Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, about 11.6% of cancer patients get separated during or after the treatment. However, what's worth noting is the sheer difference between genders. While only 2.9% of male patients experience separation after being diagnosed with cancer, a striking 20.8% of women split up with their partners because of the same. 

Should've taken therapy

After hearing the entire incident, the people couldn't help but point out the fact that taking therapy would've helped the woman. u/CaLLmeRaaandy wrote, "She married you 'in sickness and in health,' and she didn't even give you a chance to show you were serious. Her first thought was, "I have to win." Weird. That would mess me up too." Meanwhile, u/MyFriendsCallMeEpic noted, "She threw her coffee at OOP. She clearly was never taught how to deal with her frustrations that she caused all on her own; that is assault. She needs therapy pronto."
