Marriage often requires adjustments, but sacrificing your career for a partner who secretly steps out is a bitter pill to swallow. A part-time paramedic (u/samfisher730) had firsthand experience of that very heartbreak when he discovered his wife's infidelity after 8 years of marriage. The situation further took an unexpected turn when his wife demanded an open marriage so she could freely continue seeing her ex-boyfriend. The man, however, drew the line and walked away. The story shared on September 26, 2026, has received over 4,000 upvotes on Reddit.

The heartbreaking demand

The couple had been together for 12 years and married for 8 with a 10-year-old daughter. To support his wife’s lucrative career as a full-time nurse, the husband set aside his dreams of attending nursing school or entering the fire academy. Instead, he worked part-time on an ambulance while handling most of the household chores, including cooking, cleaning, yard work, and pool maintenance. Despite his active involvement as a husband and a parent, his wife said the marriage had become “stale.” She texted him out of nowhere to confess she had been physically involved with an ex-boyfriend for the last year. She also argued that staying married while keeping her side relationship with her ex-boyfriend was best for their daughter.

The final decision

Refusing to be "strong-armed" into an open relationship, the husband immediately drew the line. "I told her to get f**ked, and we are now getting divorced," he shared. What followed was a "month of hell" marked by overwhelming panic and anxiety while his wife aggressively tried to persuade him to agree to her terms. When she finally offered to cut ties with the ex and try marriage counseling, he made it clear that the damage was already done. Devastated over losing his home and split custody of his daughter, the man reflected on the heartbreak: "I would have gone to counseling, I would have worked to save the marriage, but she lied and abandoned me like a piece of trash."

Extramarital affairs

As sad as it sounds, infidelity is a prevalent factor in divorces across the United States. For instance, a study by Shelby B. Scott (among others) found that for over half (68.6%) of participants, a "final straw" led to the divorce. Surprisingly, infidelity was the most commonly cited reason, with 24% of participants agreeing.  Furthermore, data from the General Social Survey analyzed in an Institute for Family Studies overview reveals that about 13% of ever-married women in the U.S. report having had extramarital affairs. While many couples attempt reconciliation, experts note that retroactive "open relationship" often causes severe psychological distress and accelerates marital breakdown.

'She's using you'

In the comment section, fellow Reddit users rallied behind the husband, expressing intense frustration over the wife’s sense of entitlement, giving legal advice regarding custody, and calling out her attempt to weaponize an open relationship. u/Significant_Snow7980, advised, "Better save those messages to show to the judge." u/Proud-Ad1870 commented, "Please leave her; she only keeps you around for child care. She stopped you from achieving your goals to take care of your child. Go to therapy and better your life. During court, make sure to show you did the majority of the child care, as this can help with your chances of getting primary custody."
