'Do you think my kids are gonna love me?' she asked.
Different people have different reactions under anesthesia. Some wake up groggy and disoriented, while others experience confusion or even emotional responses. A study published in Anesthesia & Analgesia found that approximately 1 to 2 per 1,000 patients undergoing general anesthesia experience some level of awareness during surgery — a phenomenon known as anesthesia awareness. For Belle Blake, who was recovering from surgery, that confusion took a funny and emotional turn when she rediscovered, in real time, that she had four children. Thankfully, every moment of it was caught on video and later posted on her TikTok page @mrsbelleblake.
The video begins when Blake is on the ride home from the hospital. Still groggy from anesthesia after nasal surgery, Blake starts asking questions. Her husband, ready with a camera as she’d requested before the procedure, captures her reaction as he reminds her they have four kids. "Four babies?!?" she exclaims, clearly stunned. "Oh my God, I hit the Lotto," she continues. She follows up, "Are they gorgeous?" and beams at his simple "yeah." Then she adds, "You’re just, like, welcome everyone. All my kids deserve pancakes and bacon and…"
The video continues as Blake drifts in and out of consciousness, asking her husband a heartfelt question, "Do you think my kids are gonna love me?" to which her husband answers, "They already do." Upon learning that her son is eight years old, she asks, "Does he cuddle with me?" "He hugs you," her husband replies. Blake also learns again about her daughter’s name and says, "Daphne? Oh my God, that’s a beautiful name," before tearing up. Later, she meets her other daughter, Davina, and hears that she picked the name herself. "I’m a good mommy. You have such a pretty name, baby girl. She’s gorgeous," she says. Then, still unsure of what’s real, she asks, "Whose baby is that?" Her husband answers, "It’s yours."
Speaking to Newsweek, Blake explained that she had asked her husband to film her wake-up because she was curious what she might say. Aware that anesthesia can bring out unexpected thoughts, she wanted to record the experience in case anything unusual happened. And it did, but it also ended up being a video filled with affection and vulnerability. Watching it later, she said she didn’t remember any of the conversations. "I thought I was very funny. It was also shocking how sweet it was being told about my kids," she said. She shared that even her older children found the video amusing. In another moment, she didn’t post, she joked about the CIA being jealous of her nose job, and even forgot she was married, at one point asking her husband for his phone number. Blake said the experience reminded her how grateful she is for her family, even if anesthesia blurred the edges for a while.
The video resonated with many, garnering over 800,000 views. Comments poured in, expressing amusement and sentiment. @Chelsea wrote, "Girl, what anesthesia did they give you???" @raven48000 commented: "Imagine getting to meet your kids twice. This is so cute." @ms.lire said, "‘He’s 8 and he still loves me?’ This is a fair question, to be honest." @srose217 added, "'Do you think they’re going to love me?' 'They already do.' WHY AM I BAWLING?" @buffyritt shared, "This is so sweet that you were sooooo stoked about them."
