Hours before his wedding, a thief crashed the venue and stole supplies. Groom used his own guest list to catch him

Alex Morris and his newlywed wife, Kathryn, will have an interesting story to tell their future generations, ever since he solved a theft case on their wedding day. Just hours before the wedding ceremony, an elusive man walked into the wedding venue and sneaked away in a jeep with Bluetooth speakers, alcohol, soda, and several other drinks. Knowing that he had several of his police friends on the guest list, Morris initiated a secret search for the suspect. In less than 3 hours, the officers tracked down a 55-year-old man. While the couple read their wedding vows, the man read his rights, according to an August 20, 2026, report by KING5 News.
A pretty little white lie
Kathryn didn’t know that their marriage was starting with a lie. She didn’t know what was going on. Even when she accidentally crossed paths with Morris and sensed that something was wrong, he gave her a kiss and assured her that everything was okay. It was a Saturday, August 15, when Morris was going to tie the knot with his fiancée on the grounds of Worthington Park, operated by the Quilcene Historical Society.
Among the 260 guests were several off-duty Jefferson County Sheriff's Office deputies and a Port Townsend Police Department sergeant. After realizing that a theft had occurred, Morris reached out to the officers and asked if they could track down the stranger. They weren’t sure, but they assured him that they’d try their best.

The officers pored through the surveillance camera footage and found a jeep rolling away from the wedding venue. In less than three hours, they hunted down the driver and recovered the stolen goods before the 2 pm ceremony. The suspect was a 55-year-old Quilcene man. He was arrested and booked into the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office jail on second-degree theft charges. What started as a Sherlock Holmes mystery was solved by the time the cake was cut. Meanwhile, the incident came as a surprise to the bride, who wasn’t aware of what was happening behind the scenes. "She was just so thankful everything worked out in the end," Morris recalled.
Surveillance cameras can make people feel safer
Security cameras may do more than help investigators identify suspects after a crime has occurred. A 2025 systematic review published in the European Journal on Criminal Policy and Research examined 15 studies on CCTV and people's fear of crime. While the findings were mixed overall, seven studies reported reductions in fear, with feelings of safety showing some of the most positive effects. The review noted that the presence of cameras can act as a form of perceived surveillance, potentially making people feel that measures are in place to deter crime.
