When we go on vacation, we never bother about work, since it’s the one time we allow ourselves to disconnect completely from emails, deadlines, or office worries following us around. But when wildfires broke out on the island of Maui in Hawaii, pilot Vince Eckelkamp, who was on vacation, did not think twice before volunteering to help evacuate 330 people to the mainland US in August 2023.

Vince Eckelkamp, an American Airlines pilot, was just wrapping up his 5-day Hawaii vacation with his family when the devastating wildfires broke out on the island of Maui. The family, who were supposed to fly out on August 15, were caught up in the hotel the same day the fire started. The family then headed to Kahului Airport and drove through Lahaina hours before the region was swept by fire and was reduced to ashes.

According to Vince, the family had narrowly escaped just 5 hours before Front Street was completely charred in the wildfire. Describing the horrifying incident, Vince revealed to have witnessed roaring winds and people being pelted with sand, as the family, along with the stranded travellers, spent the night at the airport. The pilot recalled that their flight was delayed and rescheduled for the next day; however, it was only the following day that Vince learned the full extent of the damage that the wildfires had created on the island. He also learned that due to crew regulations, pilots were required to have a certain number of rest hours in between flights, due to which the plane they were supposed to leave was short of a pilot.

At least 80 people were killed and thousands were displaced after a wind-driven wildfire devastated the towns of Lahaina and Kula on Tuesday. Crews are continuing to search for missing people.

Vince took this as an opportunity to volunteer himself and evaluate his family and the other 330 people on the island. Luckily, the flight departed just 25 minutes before Vince's co-pilot reached the legal maximum limit of working hours. Interestingly, for the first time in his career, Vince piloted a passenger plane dressed in a polo shirt, shorts, and tennis shoes. The mission was known to very few people, as even the passengers were not kept in the loop of the last-minute decision to appoint Vince as the pilot.

In a study authored by Casner, Geven, and Williams in 2012 on aircraft-related emergencies, it was noted that structured practice with emergency scenarios improves pilots’ confidence and readiness when such situations occur in real life. They also outlined that unusual or high-stress circumstances often require pilots to adapt quickly. This echoes the idea that when crews are prepared through emergency-focused training, they can handle unexpected challenges more effectively.

Speaking to Business Insider, Vince praised the airport staff as the real heroes, noting that despite losing their own homes in the disaster, they continued helping others evacuate. He said, "I was in the right place at the right time," he said. "I like to think most pilots in my situation would have stepped up and did exactly what I did."
