With the holiday time nearing, there is ample opportunity to spread the cheer. Many of us are gloomy about having to work this holiday season, but others are seeing it as the perfect chance to bring a smile to another’s face. A user who goes by u/BubasAndSqueakers on Reddit revealed that he was stoked to see his USPS mailman, Steve, bring this joy to them with something special. The man was out there, doing his job, as usual, but didn’t forget to uplift his customer by leaving a sweet note of gratitude. Posting it to Reddit on December 19, users were quick to bask in the warmth of it all.

“Positive experience with USPS employee!” the title of the post read. The resident noted that they have a practice of gifting their mailman every year for Christmas. It was also mentioned in the post that the residents were worried that their new mailbox would be an inconvenience to the mailman, who has such an upbeat and packed schedule, with only minutes to spare for delivery. “We were concerned because it doesn’t really have room to deliver small packages, so he has to get out every time and walk up to our door,” the post revealed. However, Steve never complained about having to take the extra effort and was always glad to do his work dutifully.

The issue must have been mentioned during conversations with the mailman previously, but he remembered it and decided to clear it out, along with his thanks in the handwritten note.  “Thank you for your great gift,” he said, and then jumped straight to the issue. “Also, don’t worry about your mailbox, I think it’s awesome, and it’s a great color,” he wrote. He went on to express that walking to their door and delivering was part of a job he loved. “It’s not a big deal at all, haha,” he noted. He concluded the letter with a warm greeting that read, “I hope you have a great Christmas and wish you the best this new year.” According to the USPS website, as of last year, there are around 533,724 workers who put their blood and sweat into ensuring packages are delivered accurately and on time.

Zimbardo shared the heavy task it is to be a mail carrier. The role comes with many stressful deadlines and other fluctuations. In addition to work stress, these employees also have to tackle weather conditions, changes in routes, and deal with tons of different kinds of customers, as well as different packages daily. We don’t know the kind of encounters they are exposed to; many do their best with every package. To go out of your way for a package, then, and add a humane touch to it with a handwritten note, is beyond exemplary, and this mailman deserves all the love. It’s the perfect example to show how simple interactions can give you the power to make someone’s day.
