Red flags started piling up the moment she asked him about the engagement ring, and he kept making excuses to not propose
Sometimes, the nicest things about a person hide clues to the worst about them. For instance, a woman who goes by the moniker @domesteaders felt puzzled when her to-be-husband barred her from talking about her job in front of his parents. Clues piled one upon the other, and her suspicions grew. When she put the puzzle pieces together, it turned out that the man had been lying to her all the time. Thanks to his mother, he was busted. She shared the story in a 3-part TikTok video series, starting December 4, 2025, which has since garnered more than 358,600 views.

The woman shared that she had met her husband online when she was 19, and they became “inseparable” the moment they started dating. He told her that he worked as a personal trainer and was additionally going to school to become a physical therapist. While on a shopping trip, she found a ring and suggested to her to-be-husband that she wanted it for the engagement. He told her that the ring was being resized and he would propose to her before Christmas. So during the Christmas week, she eagerly waited for the proposal.
“Every time I come home, I'm just anticipating like, 'Okay, is he setting up a surprise? What is it going to be? [But] I'm just disappointed,” she described. When she called him to ask about the ring, he suddenly changed the topic by saying he was taking a flight to Vermont as his cousin had met with a horrific accident. Every night, he would FaceTime her, updating the details and answering her every question. She asked whether he would spend Christmas with her and her family. He said yes and even showed her the return ticket. On the day of return, however, he said he had to give his ticket to a pregnant mother, something he felt was the right thing to do in the moment.

The two had eloped to Texas for their marriage, but since they hadn’t celebrated a bridal shower, the woman’s aunt offered to host one at her house. While she was bragging about how he aced his finals, his mom suddenly disappeared from the event. Later, he asked her not to bring up his job in front of his parents. "When I brought it up to him later, all he told me was, 'Well, we got up, we got into a fight because she wanted me to go with her and pick up my medication. And I didn't want to leave because it was the middle of a bridal shower'" she recalled. After this, a series of events started arousing her deepest suspicions.

For instance, when the woman asked him about the ring, he told her that he had left it in a friend’s house before leaving the town, and the friend had subsequently stolen it. The other day, she asked him to go to his mother’s house and bring the shoes that she had left there. So while he was away, she opened his laptop and went through the chats between him and his mother and eventually asked her the truth. What her mother-in-law revealed jolted her in a chilling shock.

The woman recalled that her partner told her he was homeless at one point. But his mother revealed that the point in time was actually now, that he was not enrolled in any school. Even the gym he talked about was not his. He had just subscribed to the gym for a shower because he was homeless. Instead of confronting him immediately, she waited, spilled everything to her mother, and secretly texted his mother to come to their house while they were alone. When his mom showed up, she started bringing up his lies, one after the other, from his gym membership for the shower to him being jobless and not enrolled in school.

All this time, he had been lying to her. Even the news about his cousin’s accident was a lie. It was actually a planned family trip to Disneyland, his mother revealed. He lied about growing up in foster care and just about everything else. The marriage was officially over. Through the two weeks they were separated, he became active on dating websites and even dated a woman. He showed her daughter’s pictures to this woman, telling her that it was his daughter.
By this point, the woman was left distraught and feeling defensive. He even called her to give him another chance, but she knew there was no going back. Eventually, his parents ended up paying for their divorce, and the ORS office stopped contacting him for child support because he wasn’t the registered father.

Financial deception is not a rare scenario in romantic relationships. According to a survey by Forbes, one in three Americans (31%) admitted lying to their spouses about money, and another one-third of these adults said they’d been deceived. Similarly, another research found that almost half (48%) of people admit to lying to their partner about their financial situation, per Credit Connect.

Viewers encouraged the woman to move on and reassured her that she set the right track for her baby. @djf4005 commented, “Loved hearing your story and finally hearing a situation in which the parents didn’t just blindly support their son’s lies.” @veebers added, “Proud of you for standing up for yourself, staying true to yourself, and knowing that you deserve better!! and so do your babies."
