Two strangers posed as her parents to grill her boyfriend. 2 years later, she tracked them down with a wedding invite

Mid-flight, Shelley came up with an unexpected way to prank Majinska, Padgett's boyfriend. 'What if we pretend to be your parents?' she asked, and Padgett immediately jumped on board.

We have all seen those viral videos where someone asks strangers to pretend to be their family to see how people act. On a flight from Nashville to Grand Rapids, Ashley Padgett decided to test it for real. She started talking to co-passengers Tom and Shelly Kubzac, and by touchdown, they agreed to pretend to be her overprotective parents to grill her long-distance boyfriend, Max Majinska. Two years later, newly engaged and unable to forget that bond, Padgett teamed up with Allegiant Air and airport staff to track down the couple, as reported by 13 ON YOUR SIDE (@13ONYOURSIDE) on 10 October, 2026.

Meet the fake in-laws

Padgett met her now-fiancé, Majinska, through his old coworker. He had seen her pictures while in grad school and asked for her number. Soon, the couple started talking on the phone before Padgett finally decided to visit Michigan to meet Majinska in person. And that's how she met two strangers who became an unforgettable part of her life. When she boarded the flight from Nashville to Grand Rapids for her very first trip to see him, she found herself seated in the same row as strangers Tom and Shelley. The three instantly struck up a conversation and talked through the flight, and Padgett openly shared details about her boyfriend waiting to greet her at the airport.

Mid-flight, Shelley came up with an unexpected way to surprise Majinska at arrivals. "What if we pretend to be your parents?" she asked. Padgett immediately jumped on board. As they exited into the terminal, she followed the script, telling her boyfriend, "My parents didn't want me to do it by myself, so they're here with me." Tom leaned into the role and questioned him about his plans with his so-called daughter for this weekend. A stressed-out Majinska laid out his entire itinerary before Shelley confessed that they weren't her parents.

A heartfelt reunion

Following her engagement two years later, Padgett decided to track down the friendly couple who had welcomed her to Michigan. "Once we got engaged, I was like, 'I got to find these people and tell them,'" she explained. An Allegiant representative stepped in to bridge the gap. They told her that even though they couldn't share their information with Padgett, they'd ask if they would like hers. The airline then passed Padgett and Majinska's contacts to reach the Kubzacs.

The message reached Tom while he was outside doing yard work. "I immediately thought, 'Uh-oh, this could be Ashley.' I was so excited, I called halfway into cutting the grass," he said. He added that over the two intervening years, the couple frequently asked each other what their daughter Ashley must be doing. The four quickly started a group chat, where Padgett shared an engagement picture and mentioned plans for a fall ceremony in Chattanooga. Tom and Shelley immediately decided to attend her wedding. Now, both families are preparing to meet in person ahead of the big day.

Small talk on flights

This heartfelt story explains how people bond through conversations. But not everyone likes to indulge in chit-chat with their fellow passengers. In fact, a YouGov poll found that 35% of Americans like to exchange pleasantries with their co-passengers. Similarly, 32% report only some small talk with strangers onboard. Additionally, 15% of people don't like talking with their companions at all.

Meanwhile, reacting to the wholesome story, @CelesteKaotia commented, "Best wishes, Ashley and Max. Thank you to Tom and Shelley (forgive me if I misspelled that) for your sweet support for them! Best wishes and blessings to all!" @sherrimclouth8559 wrote, "Awe! Such a beautiful story. It brought me to tears! Congratulations on your engagement!"
