People say timing is everything, but for two soccer fans from South Carolina's Grand Strand, Christian and Mathi Ott, it took a stroke of absolute disaster to put them in the right place at the right time. The duo had flown to Houston to watch Germany take on Curaçao, only for their tickets to get cancelled at the last moment. After a frantic, stressful scramble right outside the stadium and shelling out a whopping $700 a piece, they were disappointed to not be able to enter the stadium. However, their adventure wasn't over just yet, as they were in for a much bigger surprise, as reported by WPDE ABC15 (@wpdeabc15) on June 22, 2026, in a clip that now has crossed over 123,000 views.

A surprise encounter

After dishing out a fortune and barely making it to the game, the following day, Christian and Mathi headed to the airport to go back home. However, their bad luck struck once again, or so they thought, after their flight was delayed. Seeking a way to pass the time following this, the friends decided to grab seats at an airport bar. It was there that they struck up a conversation with a friendly man and his wife. The travel buddies narrated to them what a stressful and adventurous trip they had, without knowing that the man they were talking to was none other than Curaçao's prime minister, Gilmar Pisas. When they learned this information, they were left stunned.

The exclusive invitation

Impressed by their dedication and unwavering spirit, Mr. Pisas offered to fly them out to any of his country's next two games, which were again Ecuador and the Ivory Coast. "Pick a game, we want to fly you out to one of our next games," he said. Although they wanted to answer with a yes right away, Mathi wanted to consult with her mother first. After a brief phone call with her, the duo accepted the invitation to the all-expenses-paid trip to Curaçao's next matchup against Ecuador — a decision that perhaps turned out to be their best.

The VIP treatment

Soon, both of them were flown to Kansas City, where they headed to the Intercontinental Plaza. They were invited to an exclusive watch party there for a Netherlands game, where the two found themselves mingling among CEOs and millionaires. "We did not look like we should be there. There were like CEOs, people worth millions and millions of dollars," they said. However, that didn't cause any commotion in the hospitality, as they bought them drinks and food. After this, it was time for the Curaçao game. There, they enjoyed the entire experience. From the seats to the fans and the game, the two really had the time of their lives, all thanks to the prime minister of Curaçao.

Price of tickets not a concern

Despite all the talk about the ticket prices in recent months, leading up to the World Cup, Christian and Mathi Ott's sudden purchase highlights that fans are willing to spend more. In fact, according to a survey held by YourGov, about 47% who are looking to attend the World Cup aren't worried about the ticket prices. In contrast, just about 14% say that the prices will be the most important factor in their planning. Meanwhile, 12% remain unsure whether it will affect their plans or not.

People laud Mr. Pisas

Nonetheless, while the prices remain debtable, people were happy to see the prime minister of Curaçao going out of his way to help these fans. @ohmighttywez wrote, "What a lovely and gracious gesture from the Prime Minister of Curaçao! A true gentleman. He gave these young men a gift they’ll never forget. There have been so many moments that have made me grateful to be alive and given me hope for humanity over the past two weeks." Meanwhile, u/sylvie-pf8vd commented, "I think these two well- mannered, classy young men left that impression on the Prime Minister for him to extend that kind of generosity! Bravo to them and their parents!!"
