The gym-going woman's discouraging remarks prompted tons of people to post supportive messages for Mary.
Words carry immense power. They can either hurt or heal. While some people use these potent instruments to heal, inspire, and empower others, others use them to project their negative beliefs. In one instance, this contrasting behavior garnered attention on the internet when Mary Fran (@itsmaryfran) posted a video about loving her overweight body. A gym-goer, Nami (@nami_m0mmy), reposted Mary’s video to mock and criticize her for promoting “unhealthy behaviors.” Nami’s distasteful comments about Mary sparked a wildfire of videos where people roasted her for cyberbullying.
Mary, who recently married her boyfriend Eddy, is known for sharing body-positivity messages and self-love videos on her TikTok channel, which has over 1.2 million followers. Sometime in 2023, she posted a lighthearted video with the message, “Just a reminder that I am very fat and very sexy,” according to Your Tango. The since-deleted video received many supportive comments. However, Nami caught people’s attention when she posted a video making scornful remarks about Mary.
Nami posted some biting comments about Mary’s positive video message. According to Your Tango, she said, “You can be happy, you can be confident – great. But what we’re not going to do is glorify unhealthy behaviors.” Her video prompted a domino effect of #stitch videos from TikTokers who slammed the gym-goer for pestering Mary for no reason. A TikToker named Annie (@anniekabannie) stitched a video with Nami’s clip, saying, “The only people agreeing with you are bottom-tier low-level roaches for men that you know would never have a chance with you over a million years.”

“Mary Fran is out there loving herself and showing other people who have similar bodies to hers that they can and should love themselves too. And what are you doing—sitting on the internet, talking s**t about strong, confident women who actually love themselves?” Annie continued. She asserted that Nami was making vitriolic remarks about Mary only because she wouldn’t love herself if she were in Mary’s place. “This is not a strong woman’s behavior. This is a weak girl’s behavior,” she said.
In another video, @sirensinsx said that Nami’s video reflected her own inner “fatphobia.” She shared this insight: “You shouldn’t put somebody else down to make yourself feel better,” and “You shouldn’t post somebody’s fat body to make your fit body look better on social media.” Esmerelda (@no_niche_babe) also addressed Nami, saying, “Why are you so bothered by a fat person just existing who doesn’t hate themselves?”

Meanwhile, Mary posted another video expressing her sadness at how certain people were sending her negative messages, even making threats after watching Nami’s video. “I don’t understand how somebody could have so much hatred and anger for somebody they’ve never met,” she said teary-eyed. “But they seem to be comfortable enough to sling horrible, horrible names and issue really scary threats, and release personal information with the threat of being hurt.” In a comment, she said that she was unplugging from social media as she felt scared, “I’m gonna take some time to feel better with my safety on here. I’m not gonna stop but I need some time.”
Once again, millions of people jumped in to support her, including Soogia (@soogia1), whose #stitch video has been liked by over 2.4 million people. Soogia called out Nami, bringing attention to how she changed her outward appearance but never thought of working on her inner self. “She changed her hair, learned how to wear makeup, and worked on her body to get really fit,” she said. She reassured Mary by saying, “So when [Nami] looks at somebody like you and sees someone who is so joyful and filled with light and love for herself and everyone around her, she doesn’t get it.”
In the comments section of Mary’s heartbreaking video, over 51,000 people posted encouraging and inspiring messages and urged her to keep going. “Take the time you need but the internet needs your sunshine baby. Filter out all the words you can imagine awful people will say and keep on shining,” wrote @mariellegreguski.
@maskoftacorro said, “You are beautiful inside and out and that is something that other person will never have your worth 10 of her please don't let her dim your light.” @identitycoach007 said, “Mary you are wasting your tears on someone who doesn't add any value to your life and doesn't matter. Keep doing you she's not important.”
