Family finds that dorm room beds are not inclusive with regard to tall people so they decide to get to work to help their tall son get good sleep.
The world is not really made for really tall people nor is it made for short people. People who have been taller than average have time and again tried to bring to people's attention the fact that they have to face a plethora of hindrances every day. Such is the story of Hank Stamper who is 6'7" and 230 lbs. A video posted by Lyndsey, his mother known on the platform as @lyndseystamper1 shows a way in which they made sure that their son can have a good night's sleep every night.
When Hank went on college visits, his mother Lyndsey always made him try out the beds to see if he would fit. However, to both of their disappointment, he never did. So, when the 18-year-old decided to commit to playing baseball at Fort Hays State University in Kansas, his family knew that they needed to check how he would fit into the bed there. During the freshman orientation, Hank climbed onto the twin XL bed which was 80 inches long, and understood that they had to do something to make him fit on these beds.
They later uploaded the video, capturing how Hank didn't fit in the beds at the deal or even through the doors of the building. The video quickly garnered a lot of attention. "When you learn nothing in your dorm is big enough!" the mum captioned the video. "My son is a giant and did not fit on his dorm room bed," she says before adding that the problem has now been solved. "For all the people worried about Hank's bed, we are working on building the extender so that he will have an extra foot."After his orientation, Lyndsey, 48 as well as her husband James got in touch with the school. While they understood where the parents were coming from, they said that he was already given the largest bed and could do nothing about it now.
"I looked online to see if there was anything we could purchase to extend the bed," Lyndsey tells PEOPLE. "There were options to make the bed wider, but nothing to make it longer. I told my husband we needed to create something to add another foot or so to the bed. The hardest part was designing a solution that wouldn’t involve drilling into or damaging the school-provided bed frame."
The family then started brainstorming and realized that it was pretty challenging to come up with a plan. This is when they decided to visit the hardware store and get the supplies that they thought they would need to help the situation. The couple got their hands on a few supplies. On the day he was supposed to move in, the parents brought the supplies including a saw to the dorm and got to work. The design was pretty simple. The parents cut two boards to fit the bed's width and held it together by two L-braces which were supported by two brackets which was triangular. The parents mentioned how they used zip ties to attach the extra portion to the actual bed as they weren't allowed to screw it in. "It's zip-tied a million times around cause we couldn't screw into the wooden part of the bed," she says.
Many took to the video to express their thoughts and commended the parents for their efforts, "Mom and Dad to the rescue and for the save! Outstanding!! " writes @sepiabear, to which the mum replied, "We try!!" Another comment by @ross82573 read, " My son is 6’9” and his college got him a bed he fit in. He’s taller than the tallest basketball players in his university. They had a nice long bed, and they make sure he gets it every year."
