Moreira revealed that the thieves were sleeping on a friend’s couch when the friend saw the story and threw them out.
When things are stolen, people often lose hope of getting them returned. However, when these two thieves realized what was inside the package they had stolen in July 2019, they took the most heartwarming action, which has amused people.
A Delaware resident’s 5-year-old boy, Timothy "Timmy" Vick Jr., was awaiting his most prized package — a replica WWE Championship belt — when two strangers were seen walking up to the door and stealing two of the packages from the front porch. The package was meant for the little boy, Timmy, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2 and later diagnosed with a brain tumor. The Facebook video shared by the Pierce County Sheriff's Office showcases two people walking up to the door and taking two packages, as one appears to exit a blue car.
Sergio Moreira, who refurbishes and customizes memorabilia through his company, Macra Productions, revealed to US Today that he learnt about the package getting stolen from his house when he was at a WWE event. Moreira revealed that one of the packages contained the replica championship belt, which was meant for the 5-year-old boy who was about to undergo brain surgery for his tumor. As the family and Moreira were on the lookout for the thieves and the stolen package, a strange twist of events took place.
In a surprising twist, the two thieves returned to Moreira's house to return the gift. This time, it came along with an apology note. He revealed that the thieves were sleeping on a friend’s couch when the friend saw the story and threw them out. The women who were guilty of stealing the kid's gift revealed to Moreira that they were homeless and dealing with drug issues. Although Moreira was initially suspicious, he let his guard down when he realized what was happening. He revealed that he wouldn't be pressing charges against the two; however, the deputies are still running to find them.
Timmy's father, Timothy Vick Sr., revealed that the replica belt was a source of comfort for his son, who is a "hardcore" WWE fan. Vick revealed, "Timmy would not go anywhere without that belt. Most kids have blankies; he had a belt." Although the parents are grateful for the thieves returning the package, they are angry at them for their deed. Vick said, "Think about it, what if it were medicine for an elderly person who needed it for their day-to-day life?" Following the news breaking out, other belt makers and collectors soon reached out to offer their support to little Timmy. Moreira shared that the boy would be receiving a completely refurbished belt, one that would stand out as truly unique. "It's going to be a belt that no one else within 100 miles of him is going to own," he added.
In a 2022 study published by Ann De Buck and Lieven J. R. Pauwels, researchers explored young people’s intentions to steal small amounts of money and how moral emotions like guilt and shame affect those intentions. The research studied how anticipated guilt, empathy, peer disapproval, and self-serving justifications shape an individual’s intention to commit theft, which was seen in the two women who stole the package. The feeling of guilt and empathy for the little kid when they realized the value of the stolen package drove them to return it through their moral awareness.
