'He sat outside for about 15 to 20 minutes, honestly knocked on the door, and just sat there, hung out, chilled and vibed,' the owner revealed.
Stories of burglars breaking into a house or a store often create fear among people. However, this story—narrated by Emma Irvine (@itsemmaokayy on TikTok)—of a man breaking into her bakery in Vancouver is hilarious and making people laugh. In a video shared by Irvine, she begins: "This is the story of my business getting broken into last night at 3'o clock in the morning."
While she narrates what happened at the store, the video plays the CCTV footage of the incident. "This guy showed up at 3'o clock and decided to hang out for a while. He sat outside for about 15 to 20 minutes, honestly, knocked on the door, and just sat there, hung out, chilled and vibed. And I just guess he got bored sitting there and decided to kick the door," Irvine explains in the video.
Meanwhile, in the CCTV footage, the man can be seen kicking the glass door and carefully entering the store. "Shout out to my guy on glass safety," says Irvine. "He walks around for a while and sits to take a rest. He must be really tired from breaking into my business."
Then the man can be seen getting a mop and cleaning the broken glass pieces. "Goes to the bathroom and then realizes he has made a huge mess of all of the broken glass, so he finds the mop and mop bucket and starts cleaning his glass mess," Irvine narrates. The video also shows selfies of the man who broke into the store. "He left us these selfies. Those are nice gifts on the store phone," the bakery owner adds.
In the end, the man can be seen leaving the store with a small package. "He was in our business for about an hour and 10 minutes and the only thing he walked out with was six chocolate champagne cupcakes," revealed Irvine.
The video went viral with about 1.8 million views. It is captioned, "Man breaks into the bakery to steal 6 cupcakes and tries to clean up after himself." Many on the social media platform found the video hilarious. @kier.sten_ commented, "Okay, but did he clock in and clock out? The man worked a whole shift and then took his employee meal." @andreamgc1 wrote, "I love how he just sits there like he's waiting for a server to show up. Like dang, what's taking so long? I want my cupcakes." @seetaterun expressed, "This is the most Canadian thing ever. He cleaned up after himself. Soo polite."
The store owner told Insider, "Initially, my heart sank. It's hard as a small business—especially coming out of COVID — to survive right now, and one more expense doesn't make it easier."
"My mindset quickly changed. It was hilarious – I was in stitches watching (the footage)," Irvine added. She also revealed that the pictures that the culprit left with orange glasses has since become an inspiration for cookies and cupcakes at her bakery, Sweet Something.
However, they filed a police report and the officers were equally amused by the thief trying to clean his break-in. Though he rested, used the bathroom and also had a glass of water, his attempts to "play around" with cash drawers were unsuccessful. While talking about the viral video, Irvine said, "I thought no one was going to see it (other than) my friends. I didn't think that we'd be getting the traction that we've gotten. The media on the business is far more than I could've ever dreamed." She hopes the money from the sunglasses-themed desserts will help them cover the cost of the damaged door.
"It's the true Canadian break-in," chuckled Emma Irvine, the bakery owner. 👀
