15-year-old saw a gamer make a suspicious comment on Discord. She took a screenshot — and helped stop the 'plan' 1,100 miles away

To ensure their safety, most parents teach their children to tattle if they find something or someone suspicious. One teenager in Dilworth, Minnesota, obeyed the instruction and helped prevent a school shooting. It started when Isabel Mansfield noticed a comment on the gaming server Discord that sounded a bit uncanny. When the Pennsylvania police followed her hunch and raided a 15-year-old girl’s home, it confirmed the suspicions, according to an exclusive September 2, 2026 report by WCCO - CBS Minnesota.
Suspicious message
Mansfield was shocked when she saw a Discord message from a girl who said she wanted to shoot up her school. “What?” was Mansfield’s response. She immediately took a screenshot and divulged the information to her dad, Preston Mansfield, who alerted the authorities more than 1,100 miles away in Rostraver Township, Pennsylvania. "When Isabel first told me, it was, 'OK, sure.' And then it got a little bit more serious," Preston recalled to CBS News.
Hunch proves correct
After the information was registered, Pennsylvania police got a search warrant and raided the house of the 15-year-old suspect. To their astonishment, Isabel's suspicions proved correct. Apart from a replica handgun, the girl had several concerning items and full shooting gear. Colleen Naylor, a Rostraver Township police officer and school resource officer, later reported that the girl was indeed planning on shooting a school “Columbine style.” Although the girl seemed to have mental health issues, the police had to take her threats seriously given all the equipment. The shooting attempt was thwarted. On Tuesday, Isabel and her father received a special salute from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
Driven by psychosis
According to a 2024 report published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, there were approximately 1453 school shootings between 1997 and 2022. The authors wrote that the frequency of school shootings has risen in the last 25 years and is now at its highest recorded levels. While there could be many reasons and backstories behind individuals participating in this crime, Columbia University’s Department of Psychiatry suggests that nearly 5% of the shootings are related to mental illnesses. About 25% are associated with non-psychotic psychiatric or neurological illnesses, including depression and substance abuse.
'See something, say something'
Viewers were saddened to know about the extent of school shootings in the US. Many lauded Isabel for speaking up instead of crouching in fear. @Nope-Not-Today-Okay commented, “School shootings wouldn't be a thing if certain people didn't feel entitled to own guns. Sadly, kids have to keep dealing with violence because of adults who want a ki**ing machine.” @otterfan3213 said, “That's why people shouldn't shrug off the ‘see something, say something’ slogan. This young woman is a star!”
Looking ahead, Mansfield urges people, including those of her age, to report what they see and what their instincts tell them, even if it seems to be a joke. Meanwhile, her father announced that he’s “beyond proud” of her courage, grit, and bravery with which she handled the entire conflict.
