Some childhood dreams fade with time. For Amy Fletcher (@ourlittlewelshview) and her husband, one of them simply waited two decades for the right moment. As teenagers, the couple would pass an old, run-down house on their way to the bus stop and imagine how beautiful it could be. Years later, after marriage, two children, and several home renovations of their own, they had all but forgotten about it—until one conversation brought the house back into their lives. In a series of Instagram videos shared on August 4, 2026, the first one garnering an impressive 846,000 views, Fletcher told the story of how a handwritten note eventually led to the couple buying the house they had dreamed about as teenagers.
A teenage dream
The story began almost two decades ago when Amy and her husband were 15 and 16 years old. Back then, they used to walk past an old house on their way to the bus stop. "That house could be so beautiful," they always said to each other. Looking back, Amy confessed that it was an odd thing to say. Nonetheless, back then it just felt right to the couple. But soon, that dream of buying that house was safely tucked in the back of their mind, as Amy and her husband got married, had children, and lived a pretty comfortable life. Until Amy got the itch to move again.
A note of hope
Although her husband resisted the idea at first, he then said: "The only house I'd ever move for is the one we used to walk past." That was it. This gave the couple the idea to revisit the neighborhood and see whether the house was still available. To their surprise, it was still the same, and it seemed no one had lived in it for years. Despite that, the pair decided to slide in a handwritten note through the door stating that they loved the house and if they ever wanted to sell, they'd love to hear from them. The couple knew this was a long shot, but they took it anyway.
The unexpected call
However, to their surprise, the next day they got a phone call. On the other end was the nephew of the man who owned the house. He told them that he had received the letter and was stunned by its timing. That was because his uncle had passed away and the house had been empty for years. Although they wanted to sell it, the house had been tied up in probate for the past two years. Even more remarkably, the probate process had been completed just one day before Amy and her husband slipped their note through the door. And so, the man asked whether Amy and her husband would like a tour of the house.
Taking the first step
Shortly after, the couple visited the house they had dreamed about owning since their teens. However, even though they knew it would be quite run-down, the condition was even worse. It looked like no one had actually lived there at least since the 1970s. Despite that, given its location, Amy knew developers and other potential buyers would snap it up in a day. It was then that the nephew revealed that they would be putting it on the market, and he just wanted someone to love it as much as his uncle did. That said, as much as the couple wanted to buy this house, arranging money for it was going to be easier said than done.
Final hurdle for the couple
The couple explored every possible way to finance the purchase, including a bridge loan, but quickly realized that the interest would be too expensive. That left them with one option: selling their current home. But it wasn't even on the market. "So now, we had to somehow sell our house... Before someone else bought our dream," Amy noted. They wasted no time, putting it on the market, hoping they could sell it before someone else snapped up their dream house. And then, almost unbelievably, things moved fast. Within 24 hours, their home had 10 viewings and three offers. They accepted one of them, clearing the biggest hurdle between them and the house they had dreamed about since they were teenagers. They finally landed the house in October 2024 and have since then spent most of their free time renovating it.
The dream came with a price
Buying a fixer-upper can turn a dream home into a major financial and time commitment. A survey of more than 2,000 U.S. homeowners by home insurance company Hippo found that more than 88% of fixer-upper owners would do things differently if given another chance. Nearly a quarter, or 23%, said they would choose a move-in-ready home instead. The survey also found that more than 62% of fixer-upper owners spend upwards of $6,000 a year on renovations.

Nonetheless, the people were amazed by Amy's story, as they expressed their emotions in the comments. @mannysharpei wrote, "That's such a lovely tale, and it was meant to come your way.
