Ava (@ava.is.a.mess) was only 19 when she moved in with her boyfriend, whom she had been dating for about a month. She was so in love with him that she'd even dreamt of marrying him. Everything was going well until Ava went on a trip with her family for New Year's, and her boyfriend started ignoring her for no reason. Initially, she let it slide until his live location exposed his infidelity. Ava recounted her horrifying experience on TikTok on July 3, and her post has received over 108,000 views.

The first red flag

It was December 2023 when Ava had gone on a trip with her family to celebrate Christmas and New Year's. But all of a sudden, her boyfriend started ignoring her. This was the "first red flag," as she described in the video. Despite being madly in love with him, Ava felt like he was cheating on her, but she chose to dismiss her instincts. Then her boyfriend told her he was going to his friend's place to play video games, but when she checked his live location, he was at a bar with a "weird woman" he had a past with.

Declining calls

Horrified, Ava called him almost 50 times, but he declined each time. The following day, the man told her that he had fallen asleep and couldn't speak to her. A week passed, and Ava returned from the trip. Out of suspicion, she started investigating her boyfriend's phone and saw he'd added random women on his Snapchat. Moreover, the man had even tried to take a girl on a date.

Confession time

Then the other day, while Ava was watching a movie with her boyfriend, she noticed a FaceTime call from the same woman on his phone. She asked him to answer it multiple times, but he stubbornly refused. When she tried to read his messages, her boyfriend snatched the phone and deleted them all. Ava knew they'd be in the recently deleted folder, so she moved towards it when he snatched the phone once more. Pissed, Ava left the room and went to take a shower. A little later, her boyfriend eventually confessed to cheating on her. Ava wasn't surprised because she was already aware of the cheating, but she was devastated by the confession. She even called her dad, who said that technically, he hadn't really cheated. A month later, she broke up with her boyfriend and moved back home. But things turned against her even more when her parents kicked her out, leaving her homeless.

Infidelity crisis in America

According to a YouGov survey, 33% of respondents who were in a monogamous relationship confessed to having cheated on their partners. Similarly, more than half (54%) have been cheated on in a relationship. While many chose to ignore infidelity, the survey suggested that women are more likely to break up if their partner cheats on them. Meanwhile, a study published in the International Journal of Women Empowerment also documented women's responses on how cheating affects an individual. While 63% of the women said that a partner's cheating affects both physical and mental health, 28% said infidelity can cause psychological issues in the betrayed individual.

Reacting to Ava's story, @basildrawsfluff suggested, “I was 17 when I moved in with my boyfriend, and now I’m also single because he cheated at the ripe old age of 20. Anyway, never date seriously in your early 20s; no one I’ve ever met was mature enough for that kind of commitment.”
