From 200 residents to just one — a fading Portuguese village receives a love letter from its last resident
He fell in love with Talasnal after his son, a scout, discovered the village on a camping trip with his friends.
A Portuguese village, Talasnal, once occupied by over 200 inhabitants, has only one resident today — Jorge. "I'm the only one with a mailbox," he joked. Jorge found the village after his son, a scout, arrived in Talasnal with his friends on a camping trip. He absolutely fell in love with the beautiful place and told his father about it. Eventually, Jorge, too, fell in love and decided to call it home. Panni Anikó Cser (@annainlisbon), a former TV reporter, shared further details on her Instagram profile.
Today, Jorge, who runs a bar called "Bar O Curral," is the sole permanent resident of Talasnal, but the village wasn't always this scanty. It was once fully occupied; at one point, it had over 200 villagers. "Then in the '50s and '60s, people started to leave, and the village became completely abandoned," Jorge explained. However, being the only resident, Jorge does everything possible to keep the culture alive. "We have Chafana, which is a typical dish of this region," he added. Taste Atlas says 'Chafana' is a slow-cooked Portugese stew. "Chanfana is a hearty goat (or lamb) stew that is assembled and baked in clay pots.
Reportedly, Talasnal is a pretty old village. Until the mid-20th century, villagers earned a livelihood through agriculture, livestock farming and forestry. However, in the 1950s and 1960s, the village was deeply affected by the rural exodus — large-scale voluntary migration of people in search of better opportunities. Talasnal remained abandoned for years until the 2000s, when it was restored. Besides Jorge's bar, the village also has a few renovated houses, rural accommodations, and modest eateries that visitors enjoy.
Interestingly, Talasnal isn't the only village that was completely abandoned. A study using data from the Mission Antyodaya revealed that around 28,000 Indian villages had no residents in 2022-23. Likewise, another study reported that nearly 800 villages have disappeared in Ukraine over the last 30 years. But why do villagers abandon villages? Well, there are various reasons behind it. While some blame the lack of job opportunities, education and access to proper healthcare, others blame infrastructure, compromised quality of life, and social and political factors. Talasnal, the Portuguese village, was also once abandoned for the same reasons, but community effort restored it, making it a major tourist attraction.
