The captain was diagnosed with cancer before the 2024-25 season began and the players came together to support him.
Receiving support and encouragement from people while one is going through a tough time can be a big deal. A Swedish club became that support system for their captain who was diagnosed with cancer before their 2024-25 season began. The players stood in solidarity for their captain and his healing, eliciting an emotional reaction from their leader who is battling an aggressive form of the disease. The display of solidarity beyond the field has gained a lot of attention and support from people on X, where the club goes by @KalmarAIFFK.
In the video posted on X, the team and the staff shaved their heads to show support for their captain, Markus Heman. The players and the staff sat on a chair one by one, shaving their hair with a razor. This included the center-back Stig Lagerwall, the striker Bengan Bhunkhunthod and the center-fielder Karl Alexsson, among other players and trainers. The team did it before a meeting with the captain, as per The18, so he had no idea what he was about to see when he entered the room. The man was on the verge of tears upon seeing the sight before him. He was in tears as all the players came in to hug him and comfort him.

Heman continued to cry, moved by his team's gesture as some of the players came forth to comfort him again. Once everyone settled down, Olle Bjorkegren, a center-fielder revealed a tattoo that he got made for Heman. It read "MHFC" short for "Markus Heman F*** Cancer." The man stood up to hug his teammate in gratitude for his support. Because of his diagnosis, the player cannot be a part of this season, a big challenge for the club, as per The18. After the video's success on X, the club decided to host a fundraiser for Heman by dedicating a match to him, according to an Instagram post from their account, @kalmar_aik_herr.

In a follow-up video on Instagram after the game, the team revealed, "Last Saturday, we didn’t just play for points, but for our friend and teammate Markus Heman, who’s battling cancer. Down 0-3 at halftime, we found the strength to come back and ended the game with a 3-3 draw. We couldn’t be prouder of our performance and the support we received from all of you.
Thank you to everyone who came out and supported us, both in person and from afar. All proceeds from the match went to Markus, and we’re overwhelmed by the love and support pouring in, not just from Kalmar, but from across Sweden and around the world. This match reminded us that football is so much more than just a game – it’s about community, strength, and always fighting for each other. Markus, we’re with you every step of the way!"
