Students stand up for their classmate battling cancer, make teacher apologize for being insensitive

Life can be difficult for young cancer patients with many treatments and restrictions on their bodies. One of the most visible and emotional struggles that they have to contend with is losing their hair, either due to radiation treatment or surgery. While most of them do grow their hair back, they struggle to come to terms with it. u/SquidlyMan150 posted about an inconsiderate teacher who forced a young patient to take off her wig in class. The student details how there was a girl at their high school who shared a class and was diagnosed with a disease that necessitated brain surgery. As a result of these surgeries, she had giant scars all over her head. The girl also lost a lot of hair because of the medications she had to take. Despite all this, the girl just wanted to go back to school like everyone else as soon as she recovered. Thankfully, she made a return to school and went wig shopping on a weekend. She showed up all excited with a wig that resembled American singer Dolly Parton's hairstyle. They write, "She looked awesome; you could tell she felt good too! Which is what mattered to us!" The Reddit user stated that the unique wig could be done if one was willing to put in some time and effort.

Unfortunately, one of their teachers did not approve of the wig. The girl and her classmates tried to explain the situation to her, but she paid no heed to it. It soon escalated to the point where the teacher demanded the girl take the wig off despite protests from the entire class. The girl was very mature about it and calmly took off the wig and got ready for class. She also apologized for distracting her classmates.

The absence of the wig revealed all her scars and it slowly dawned on the teacher that her request was insensitive. They wrote, "The teacher couldn't focus, just kept losing her place and staring at her, the giant bright red scars." All of her classmates thought she was beautiful even without the wig and paid no attention to it. Wanting to do something about the teacher's lack of empathy, many of her classmates went to the principal even before the period ended.

Once the issue was raised, the teacher was made to apologize to the girl. She then stated that the girl was "exempt from the rule," although nobody knew what the exact rule was. The girl maintained a calm composure throughout this and simply replied, "But I don't want to distract my classmates." The teacher left the school within a month after the incident.
