'He was silently looking at it so longingly and it was really nice seeing his face light up...'
Humility can be a rare trait, especially for those who have tasted success. However, some people never forget their struggles and are quick to lend a helping hand to others in need. Sharing one such story, a Reddit user recounted on September 22 how a kind stranger stepped in to pay for their groceries when their card was declined. And as if that wasn’t touching enough, the story ends with an even more heartwarming twist!
A kind dad with his kids paid for our groceries after my card declined twice and I had to embarrassingly leave everything behind in front of my child, I broke down in my car afterwards.

Reddit user u/Wonderful_Fig_6039 shared an incident that brought him to tears on popular subreddit r/randomactsofkindness. The man had visited the grocery store with his son, and while grabbing a bunch of items, he also asked his son to grab a candy bar for himself, as he had noticed his son looking at it longingly. The dad, who had been tight on budget lately, hadn't been able to give his son a treat and was happy to watch his son's face light up when he asked him to grab the candy. However, when it was his turn to pay, his card got declined twice, as he had realized that a bill had gone through, which put him in a negative balance. The man felt extremely embarrassed as he noticed other people in the queue watching him, while the cashier stood there, annoyed. Feeling defeated, the man kept all of the items on the counter and walked back with his son empty-handed. Watching his father, the sons assuredly said, 'It's okay, daddy, I don't need it,' which broke the man, who was trying to contain his tears.
Back in his car, he broke into tears and decided to drive off when an angel appeared in the form of a fellow father. The stranger who came running with his kids handed the Reddit user the things he had left at the grocery store, including the candy bar. He then told him that he paid for everything and assured him that he had been in the same place as him once. Promising him that it will get better one day, the kind stranger made the Reddit user emotional. He thanked the man as he walked away. However, what made the day even better was when his son decided not to eat the candy bar all alone, but saved it till he could go home and share it with both his parents.
That day, generosity was not only shown to the Reddit user by a stranger, but his son, who witnessed it all, also learned a meaningful lesson in kindness. A study authored by Dr Kimberly A. Schonert-Reichl found that children learn social behaviours through observation and imitation, a concept central to social learning theory. When parents model kindness through actions like helping others, expressing empathy, and engaging in prosocial behaviours, their children are more likely to adopt these behaviours themselves.
As soon as the post gained traction, many users hailed the kind stranger for his humility. u/MrsNuggs wrote, "It's nice to hear that some people still have kindness in their hearts. It will get better."

So what a wonderful thing for that person to do for you." @SWNMAZporvida commented, "Karma smiles on you. When things are better, pay it forward. (It’ll get better)."
