The way your partner treats you and other people around you speaks volumes about their behavior. A woman who goes by u/hellodollyyyx0 shared how her usually "sweet" boyfriend turned into someone she did not recognize during a plane ride home. The couple had been dating for 11 months, and things were going great. Out of the blue, after meeting her family, his whole demeanor changed, and he showed her his true colors. His behavior became noticeable enough that she apologized to a stranger sitting nearby, but before the plane landed, the woman secretly slipped her a note that made her look at the relationship differently. The post was shared on August 15, and it received 71,000 upvotes and 675 comments.

Flipped switch

The author met her boyfriend a month after she moved to America. They shared the same kind of humor, interests, and goals. He had been incredibly sweet and thoughtful throughout these months, and recently met her family and friends, including her dad and brother. She even bragged a little to her friends, saying that her relationship was "better than I could have imagined. However, on the flight back home, her "sweet" boyfriend turned into the "biggest a*sh*le" out of nowhere.

Woman to woman

The author thought they had a good time meeting her family, but on the flight home, he flipped his entire personality. He treated her horribly and talked down to her. One time, he got up to use the bathroom, and he pushed his way past her and another female passenger. Embarrassed by her boyfriend's rude behavior, she apologized to the woman, who brushed it off. But when the plane landed, the woman secretly handed her a note.

Curious to know what the woman had to say, she rushed to the ladies' room and read it. It said, "I’ve been you before. You are not responsible for his behavior. You deserve better. If you need help, call me." She left her name and number for the author. The woman's note opened the author's eyes and made her realize that she did not deserve that kind of treatment from someone who claimed to love her. She was supposed to move in with him in October, but made up her mind to break up with him.

When the honeymoon phase is over

The author's situation depicts that violence is not always physical. A 2006 poll by The Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) asked 600 women about their views on domestic violence. Three out of four women said that name-calling or put-downs (verbal abuse) were considered domestic violence. 44% agreed that even occasional harsh words fall under the same category.

The author also mentioned that she had never seen this side of her boyfriend, even though they had been dating for 11 months. A survey by Mattress Clarity revealed that the "honeymoon period" in a relationship can range from four months to as long as 11 months. After 11 months of dating, the honeymoon period had worn off, and her boyfriend showed her his true face.

Readers agreed that the lady on the plane was right and encouraged the author's idea to break up with her boyfriend. u/rdg04 wrote, "Traveling with a partner gives such an amazing insight into who they really are. It takes the partner out of their routine/comfort zone where they have control, making it easier to put on a PR mask. When you pull them out of that, their true self shows. I'm glad that lady was on the plane with you. People are put in front of us for a reason." u/crawlerprincessdonut added, "My SIL was you, too. I'm glad you're breaking up with him and that the other passenger handed you that note. You deserve more than carrying around someone else's moods or having to feel responsible for them. Good luck!"
