Steve Nicks has shared how Taylor Swift is helping her to grieve the loss of her late Fleetwood Mac bandmate Christine McVie. On May 22, the 74-year-old Fleetwood Mac singer was performing at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena when she paused the concert to thank Swift for her song on her latest album, "Midnights." She said, “Thank you to Taylor Swift for doing a favor for me, and that is, writing a song called ‘You’re on Your Own, Kid,'” adding that it encapsulates "the sadness of how I feel." According to Entertainment Weekly, the "Bella Donna" singer is currently on a co-headlining tour with Billy Joel, the first since the death of Christine McVie in November 2022.

"As long as Chris was even on the other side of the world, we didn't have to talk on the phone; we weren't phone buddies," Nicks said. "We'd go back to Fleetwood Mac and we'd walk in and it'd just be like, 'Hey, little sister, how are you?'" "It was like never a minute had passed. Never been an argument in our entire 47 years. Never," she continued. “When it was the two of us, the two of us were on our own, kids. We always were, and now, I’m having to learn to be on my own, kid, by myself," Nicks succinctly added. She addressed the audience, saying, "You help me to do that. Thank you. I love you and you've been awesome. I'll never forget you. Take care of yourselves, be well, just be who you are. Thank you."

Swift's song "You’re on Your Own Kid," follows the story of a young person as they navigate loveless relationships, navigating fame, love, and the people that person has lost and gained over the years. "Everything you lose is a step you take / So make the friendship bracelets / Take the moment and taste it / You've got no reason to be afraid," Swift sings. "You're on your own, kid / Yeah, you can face this / You're on your own, kid / You always have been." As Swift wrote on Twitter, “Midnights is a collage of intensity, highs and lows and ebbs and flows. Life can be dark, starry, cloudy, terrifying, electrifying, hot, cold, romantic, or lonely. Just like Midnights.”

The song, co-written and produced by Jack Antonoff for Swift’s 10th studio album, “You’re on Your Own, Kid” isn’t the first song that Nicks has connected with since the death of her beloved friend. According to Billboard, the day McVie died, “The Chain” singer penned a personal tribute from Haim’s “Hallelujah,” “You were there to protect me like a shield/ Long hair, running with me through the field/ Everywhere, you’ve been with me all along.” “See you on the other side, my love,” she’d added in the note. “Don’t forget me.”

As reported by the US Magazine, McVie’s cause of death was revealed in April 2023, with her death certificate citing a stroke and a secondary cause of cancer. When the British musician’s family announced her passing in 2022, their statement noted that she suffered from “a short illness.” When the news of McVie's death broke out, Nicks was the first one who shared her public condolences. “A few hours ago, I was told that my best friend in the whole world since the first day of 1975 had passed away. I didn’t even know she was ill… until late Saturday night. I wanted to be in London. I wanted to get to London—but we were told to wait,” she wrote in a letter shared on Instagram in November 2022.
