Abandoned by her father at three, she inherited her entire saving, leaving his current family shocked

Trigger Warning: This article contains themes of substance abuse that some readers may find distressing.
Imagine getting a call out of the blue about your drug addict father who abandoned you at just three years old, only to discover he's no more and has left you everything he owned. Meanwhile, he's left his current family completely empty-handed. Well, for one Reddit user (u/Emotional_Payment_66), this became a reality. In a post, she shared that after her father passed away from cancer, he left his $100,000 insurance policy, $35,000 in savings, and his house, estimated to be worth around $400,000, entirely to her. However, her "stepmother" was not having it, and she demanded that she split the money.
AITA for not splitting my inheritance with my “step family.”

Meanwhile, he just left $100 each to the woman he lived with and her children. Nonetheless, even before the daughter could sort out the formalities, she ran into a problem with her father's current wife. "The problem is that his wife hadn’t ever planned on working again; she had quit her job when she moved in with my dad and hasn’t worked in six years," she wrote. "She was telling me that it would be wrong to keep all of the money, especially since I never made up with him."
The "stepmother" insisted the inheritance should be divided equally among the four of them, including her and the children. In response, the poster refused outright, pointing out that her father had been absent from her life for years while the other family got to be part of it, and ended the conversation without agreeing to anything.

Despite her going through unimaginable hardships, both financially and mentally, while growing up, the author wasn't too sure whether or not it was right to keep the money. Even more so, because she shut down her father when he tried to reconcile with her after sobering up. "I mean, my dad never did anything for me, so this last grand gesture is really all I’ll have," she reasoned. Even though that should be more than enough of a reason for her to keep that money and use it for her college and other expenses, a revelation from her grandmother was the last nail in the coffin.
As it turns out, the woman her father was living with was never his wife. "They never actually got married; they had a ceremony six years ago, but they didn't sign any marriage licenses because they thought my mom was still alive and that he was married to my mom. She didn't want him to reach out for a divorce because again, he might have relapsed," the daughter said. As if that wasn't enough, amid all of this, she was also allegedly cheating on her father. Following this, she decided to keep the money her father had left her.

Many children grow up in strained or distant relationships with their parents, often shaped by instability at home. According to a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health, nearly 19 million U.S. children, or almost 1 in 4, have lived with at least one parent or primary caregiver who had a substance use disorder in 2023. Over 7.5 million children lived with a parent dealing with a moderate to severe substance use disorder, while nearly 3.5 million had a parent struggling with multiple substance use disorders. Therefore, despite everything she went through, the woman ended up with a rare sense of closure and support that many others never get.

Readers also supported her decision and assured her that she did the right thing. "You don’t know his wife. You don’t owe her anything. If your father left them each $100, he knew what he was doing. That inheritance is yours. Good luck with your future," Even_Speech570 wrote. "This is exactly right. We were advised to do the same thing because then the relatives can't claim the deceased 'forgot' them. If the wife's name wasn't on the deed, then she's SOL," commented u/Montanapat89.
