Springdale police charged them with criminal mischief for intentionally damaging a park swing
Most people have childhood memories of harmless mischief: pushing the limits on a playground, getting caught and maybe facing a stern timeout for a weekend. But for one Springdale, Allegheny County, family, routine playground shenanigans took a wild turn. This happened after two sisters, Olivia and Brooke Huss, allegedly broke a swing at Veterans Memorial Park. However, instead of a simple reprimand from the neighborhood, their mother, Katie Huss, was stunned when police officers showed up at their door. What happened next was truly unbelievable, WTAE-TV Pittsburgh (@WTAE) reported on August 28, 2026.
Playtime took a turn
The ordeal began on 21st May, 2026, at the Veterans Memorial Park in Springdale, when 10-year-old Olivia and her 12-year-old sister Brooke were playing with several neighborhood friends. The two were seated on either end of a seesaw swing while their friends were twisting it to make them dizzy. But the chain suddenly broke, and the Huss sisters fell to the ground. Frightened but unharmed, the girls immediately called their mother. "My only concern was making sure my daughters were okay," Katie told TribLIVE.
Initially, Katie didn't think much of the incident until Springdale Borough Police initiated an investigation into municipal property damage. According to law enforcement, five juveniles were found involved in breaking the swing, and officials sought restitution by splitting the repair bill among the households at roughly $59 per child. However, Katie received a massive $400 bill. Moreover, she was also instructed to "pick up and distribute to the other families involved." This was something she firmly declined. So, when the other families settled their shares, the police decided to take action against Huss.
Justice for the sisters
Olivia and Brooke were then charged with criminal mischief for damaging property with malicious intent. But rather than accepting the criminal charge, the Huss family opted to take the matter to court. Although the department pushed for an out-of-court settlement, the family stood firm. "We remained firm that we wanted the court to make its judicial decision on the record," Katie later stated. After carefully evaluating all the evidence, the court then declared that both sisters were not guilty.
Meanwhile, Police Chief Derek Dayoub and Solicitor Craig Alexander maintained that the kids didn't intend to break the swing. Despite that, Huss fears that officials might file a civil lawsuit against her daughters. But Katie is ready to face that. This incident shows why some people find it hard to trust law enforcement. In fact, according to a Gallup survey, only about 51% have a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in the police. This number drops to just 43% among young adults (aged 18 to 34).
'File a counter suit'
That being said, netizens seemed furious at law enforcement in the comments. Reacting to the incident, @GozerTheTraveler-dtny2la commented, "American priorities are so out of whack. Prosecute 10- and 12-year-old girls for accidentally breaking a swing but refuse to prosecute those who abuse 10- and 12-year-old girls."
At the same time, @CCAlexis899 pointed out, "This is absolutely ridiculous. Every kid has played that game on the swings. Mom needs to dig her heels in and not pay anything. It costs the city more money to print the lawsuit documents than it would have to reattach the swing to its chain. Mind you, the mother's tax dollars help pay for the park, and the city officials obviously have too much time on their hands if they can antagonise children. Give me a break."
