When the person turned up without a gift, their sister-in-law decided to rethink the gift card

Materialistic stuff doesn't really matter, but things get complicated when a gift is given to humiliate others. In a June 21, 2026, Reddit post, a person (u/infinite_article4180) recalled how their sister-in-law handed them a Sephora gift card, only to embarrass them in front of the store cashier. The post has since received over 1,500 upvotes online.
My in-laws gave me a gift card for my birthday… with no money on it.

Just before the author's birthday, their sister-in-law expressed a desire to give them a gift. "I was a bit reluctant since I don’t really celebrate birthdays, and if I can be honest, I’ve received gifts from them before, and they sucked," they explained. In fact, the author recalled how their sister-in-law had once gifted them a dress that did not fit. Another time, she had sent them cranberry-scented candles, which she knew the author hated. Anyhow, time passed, and the author didn't receive any gifts from their sister-in-law until her birthday.

A day after her own birthday party, the sister-in-law and her husband handed the author a $50 Sephora gift card. "I was excited. I love Sephora, and honestly, any money that can help at Sephora is greatly appreciated," they confessed. Although the person felt as if their sister-in-law did not want to gift them because they hadn't gotten anything for her, they didn't think much of it. A few weeks later, the author went to a Sephora store to buy something, but they soon realized that the card was empty. Embarassed, the person informed their fiancé, who then called his sister to confront the situation. But instead of apologizing, she said, “It is what it is,” and stopped contacting him. However, later, the sister-in-law texted the author and said she hated how the bizarre situation made them feel, but she didn't mean any harm. Regardless, the author did not respond to her and decided not to speak to their partner's sister.

Gift exchange can be a highly stressful situation, and failing to match another’s gift can cause anxiety. In fact, a survey by Mixbook found that 4 in 10 American adults feel anxious about the right gift for their loved ones. The stress is so real that 12% of gift shopping is even more difficult than managing finances or negotiating for a raise or promotion at work. Now, while the author did not expect their sister-in-law, they did feel bad when she went overboard to humiliate them in front of the Sephora cashier.

Meanwhile, reacting to the Reddit post, uSaberise explained, “What it sounds like to me is, since the money was put on the card the day of her birthday. They had gone and got the card figuring they would give it to you at the same time you gave her her gift, but since you didn’t have a gift for her, she went online and used the card up." Similarly, u/bopperbopper commented, “Keep that Sephora gift card and give it back to her for the next occasion." u/18k_gold said, “Going forward never accept or give them a gift and tell them,'I don't think we should exchange gifts going forward.' If they ask why, say, 'you know why.'"
