A 25-year-old soon-to-be bride (u/emfayea) found herself in a flat spin after her sister-in-law, Sarah, when she noticed discourteous and entitled behavior from her and decided to uninvite her from her bachelorette party. To avenge this insult, the SIL secretly devised a plan to steal her thunder. The author's September 30, 2026, Reddit post has tallied 3,600 upvotes.

Pressing reason to withdraw the invitation

The bride-to-be shared that her bachelorette party was planned for August and half of the girls were invited. Sarah, her brother’s fiancée, wasn’t part of this group. They weren’t too friendly, and neither of them put any effort into being so. But after Sarah got engaged to her brother in June, she decided to send an invitation to her as well. It was months in advance, but Sarah RSVP’d yes. Then a trail of incidents prompted the bride-to-be to develop resentment towards Sarah. During the bridal shower, for instance, Sarah didn’t arrive until quite late, refused to be a part of the photo shoot, and left before greeting goodbye to her.

Another incident happened at the author’s brother’s house when he asked her to see her dog at their house. She agreed to walk the dog and spent about 20 minutes petting it. She even took a cute photo of the animal and sent it to both her brother and Sarah. Apparently, Sarah wasn’t appeased by her babysitting the dog in their house. A deluge of texts popped up on her phone from her brother, who said Sarah was furious and she hated someone being in their house. “I was put off because I didn’t know my visit was a secret from her. I’d also been in their house many times before with them,” the author recalled.

Unhinged overreaction

After these incidents, the author decided to uninvite Sarah from her bachelorette party because they didn’t want her to create drama there. All the communication was via her brother or someone else, never directly with Sarah. The bachelorette happened without her. However, two weeks before the wedding, Sarah avenged this insult by secretly eloping away with her brother and getting married. Her brother later told her that Sarah wanted to “beat” her to the altar because she didn’t invite her to the bachelorette party.

On a 30-person chat, her brother kept on blaming and accusing her for hurting Sarah’s feelings. The other half of the girls who weren’t invited had no problem with not getting invited, but Sarah had. When she couldn’t take it anymore, she lashed back by saying, “And she isn’t entitled to be invited, as it is my party and I can invite who I would like.”

It's okay to disinvite

According to YouGov data, over half (53%) of Americans think it is acceptable to disinvite someone from a wedding, but only for a pressing reason. Another 8% say that it’s acceptable to disinvite them in any circumstance. About 66% believe it can be acceptable to disinvite someone from a wedding, though most say there should be a valid reason. Just 19% of men say it is never acceptable, compared with 29% of women. Overall, 24% of Americans believe someone should never be uninvited once they have already received a wedding invitation. In this case, Sarah’s behavior on previous occasions was clearly a good reason for the bride-to-be to disinvite her from the bachelorette party.

'Her relationship won't last very long'

Readers received the story with mixed reactions. Some said it was the author’s fault for not directly communicating with Sarah; others remarked that Sarah is insufferable and can’t be helped. u/altruistic_relief189 commented, “And sorry to say it, but this marriage is probably the end of the relationship between your brother and your family. There are a ton of unhealthy behaviors and attitudes that will make it impossible to get along with him and his wife.” u/BlaqueDaliah echoed the observation, “Don’t worry about her. She won’t last very long, especially if this is the preview for the rest of their lives.”
