'I have never known that kind of tender affection from a male family member...'
Kristina Carrillo-Bucaram (@fullyrawkristina on Instagram) was closest to her grandpa, whom she fondly called her "Jêddo," but sadly, after spending a lifetime together, he passed away, leaving her heartbroken. Today, every moment Kristina spent with her Jêddo stands as a true testimony to the bond they shared, and one such moment is their last hug before his demise. She shared the video on July 27, 2025, and it has gotten over 850K views so far.
It was his final words to her that really hit her hard, and yet made her incredibly hard. "The last thing that Jêddo said to me before he passed was that he was proud of me," she wrote.
Jêddo took his beloved granddaughter, Kristina, in his loving arms and whispered sweet nothings, making their final moments together truly unforgettable. As tears rolled down Kristina's cheeks, her grandpa continued, "She's a beautiful, beautiful girl, and a smart girl." He even asked her about her farm, and repeatedly told Kristina he was proud of her. The duo also sang Jêddo's favorite song, "You Are My Sunshine," while he was in the hospital bed. It was definitely hard for Kristina to see someone she absolutely loved and adored nearing death, but it was Jêddo's loving words that, perhaps, kept her moving forward in life.
"Jêddo and I had so many moments like this — he would hold me, console me, and comfort me," she confessed, describing how her grandpa would just be there, consoling her while Kristina was a crying mess. "My phone is filled with thousands of photos and videos of Jêddo. I have so many, it feels impossible to choose just a few to share. It’s a lifetime of moments I will cherish for the rest of my life," she wrote. Much like Kristina and Jêddo, most grandchildren share a beautiful relationship with their grandparents. They not only depend on each other for emotional support, but also learn new things from one another.
So, losing a grandparent is never easy, no matter how prepared you are. In fact, as per the National Library of Medicine, citing a qualitative study by Manoogian et al. (2018), young adults who lose a grandparent often change their lifestyle, as they become more aware of how fragile life is for them and everyone else around. Moreover, the study found that losing a grandparent not only affects them individually but also shifts the family dynamics, bringing out huge, unprecedented change. Meanwhile, Kristina's heartfelt video received an outpouring of love on social media, leaving netizens teary-eyed. @erinstanczyk commented, "What a blessing of a human to have in your life. You have spent both quality and quantity time together, a true blessing. Sending prayers for your healing."
A user who goes by @summerfoodskauai pointed out, "Oh, Kristina, no matter how much time we are given with our loved ones, it’s never enough or easy to say goodbye. I’m so sorry for your loss and hope you can see him all around you. Such a beautiful life & love." Echoing the sentiments, @marla_savoie wrote, "I have never known that kind of tender affection from a male family member or felt that closeness. You have been blessed. It’s clear how much he loved and cherished you and how much you felt the same." @elekeatsjewelry said, "His arms are always going to be wrapped around you, saying these sweet words to you, honey. Oh my god, it's such a blessing to have him. I’m so sorry you can’t hug him in physical form anymore, but please know that his arms are always around you, and my heart is with yours, dear heart!"
