Modern Hinge dates feel like an unpredictable obstacle course, where a simple coffee meetup spirals out of control. While most first dates end after an hour or two over food or drinks, Olivia Knox (@oliviaknoxofficial) found herself on a date that lasted a whopping nine hours. What began as an unexpected surfing trip quickly turned awkward when he started scrolling through old pictures of his muscular abs mid-date. He even took things personally when Knox refused to share a spoon for the ice cream. On Aug 6, 2026, she took to TikTok to detail her horrendous date experience, which has received over 55,000 likes.

@oliviaknoxofficial I know I said poke wrong don’t worry about it- and yes I still go on hinge dates and yes they are all bad #hingedatestory #hinge #datestorytime #storytime ♬ original sound - Olivia Knox (:

Change of plans

It all began when Olivia matched with a guy on Hinge who was obsessed with surfing. Though he initially invited her to hit the waves for their first date, she politely declined it. Olivia insisted they save surfing for later and meet over food instead, and her Hinge match agreed. However, when he came to pick her up, he changed the plans without informing her. He drove Olivia to Newport Beach, which was a nearly two-hour drive from central Los Angeles. Overwhelmed by anxiety, she found herself enduring an excruciating drive: "My whole body's like shutting down... He's like, 'Why are you so nervous? Why do I make you nervous?" He even started singing Disney songs while constantly grabbing her hand. Olivia was so uncomfortable that she wanted to jump out of his car.

After arriving at the beach, the date took an even weirder turn when the man popped his trunk, stripped down, and took his wetsuit to hit the waves. He even insisted Olivia put on an extra pair of wetsuits and join him in surfing. She, however, declined and stood on the beach watching him surf in non-existent waves while questioning her life choices. To make matters worse, it started to rain, and she couldn't even book an Uber due to her financial issues. After a 20-minute surf, her date came back upset that she didn't see him surfing. Olivia finally stood up for herself and called out the chaotic detour. Realizing his mistake, her date offered to buy her poke, a Hawaiian-style dish, and Olivia decided to give him another chance.

A scoop of self-obsession

When they reached the restaurant, her date started checking his earlier pictures and flaunting his muscular physique. "And I'm like, oh, that's so cool. No questions about myself. Nothing," Olivia recounted. Later, he pulled into a McDonald's drive-thru, ordered a single Oreo McFlurry for himself without asking what she wanted. When Olivia asked for another spoon, he grew visibly annoyed: "He's like, 'You don't want to share a spoon with me?' And he made fun of me for that the entire time... sitting there scrolling through pictures of his abs and talking about how much money he's going to make," she added.

Despite the mounting red flags, the marathon date continued on to a second, even more distant beach to watch the sunset. There, the guy rubbed her hand against his mustache. He even started making disparaging remarks about other women near the beach. After nearly two and a half hours of a tense drive back home, during which he bragged about future job prospects and sang along to unfamiliar tracks, Olivia finally made it home and promptly cut off all communication.

Dating apps and mismatched expectations

According to a Pew Research Center survey, roughly 30% of U.S. adults have used a dating site or app. But, surprisingly, most dates through dating apps don't turn out to be fruitful. In fact, a Forbes Health report found that 78% of dating app users feel emotionally or mentally burnt out, citing mismatched expectations, poor behavior, and exhaustion from unsuccessful meetups as primary factors. Interestingly, 17% of such experiences are on Hinge.

'He was recreating a date with his ex'

The comments section exploded with utter disbelief. For example, @justmemyselfandiiiiiiii expressed disbelief by commenting, "Girl....you stayed through all of that? Wow." Similarly, @claire.goldie humorously theorized, "I can almost guarantee that he was trying to recreate a date he had with an ex."
