Jacky (@jacklynne), a Dubai-based content creator, continued funding her jobless ex-boyfriend for years, only for him to call her a "gold-digger" in the end. From supporting his basic needs to financing his passing hobbies, she did everything she could to make him happy. In fact, Jacky even helped her boyfriend land a job through someone she knew. But when it was time for him to reciprocate her support, the man refused to pay for her prenatal checkup and got a tattoo instead. Jacky shared an Instagram video recalling the incident on July 30, 2026, and her post has received over 45,000 likes.

A never-ending wishlist

Jacky shared that her ex-boyfriend was unemployed for about two years, and during that time, she paid his expenses. Even though he helped her by doing all the household chores, such as washing her undergarments and cooking meals, his childish and avoidant behavior often led her to rethink the relationship. The other day, for instance, her ex-boyfriend told her that he got bored at home and he needed to get into basketball. When Jacky bought him a basketball, he complained about it because he needed the expensive one.

‘Just hire my boyfriend instead?’

After a few days, her boyfriend came to her with a new demand: “My basketball era is over,” he said, and asked her to buy a skateboard. Jacky loved him so much that she agreed to buy him a skateboard without any hesitation. Amidst his changing hobbies, the woman approached someone she knew and asked if he could help her boyfriend get a job. "Context: There was this guy who liked me, and then I asked him, 'Could you just unlike me and... just hire my boyfriend instead?'" Jacky recalled. He agreed, and her boyfriend got a job at a decent hotel.

A cruel accusation

Around the same time, Jacky realized she was pregnant. So, when her boyfriend received his first salary, she asked him to pay for her prenatal checkup. However, he refused, saying he had invested the money in the down payment of “The Godfather” tattoo, a movie he hadn’t even watched. When Jacky got angry, he blamed her and called her a gold-digger. "He got me pregnant, and he has not been paying child support ever," she wrote in the comments.

'Choose your man carefully'

In a July 30 video, Jacky revealed that she broke up with her boyfriend when their daughter was just six months old and that it was the best decision of her life. “As a single mom in Dubai, I have one piece of advice: Choose the right man very carefully,” she said in another video, joking that breaking up with her ex was 50% her fault, 25% his fault, and 25% the fault of the brand whose contraceptive pill didn’t work.

A silent crisis

Unfortunately, Jacky is not alone in having a partner so timorous as to step out of support during the sensitive period of pregnancy. Studies indicate that many men shy away from fulfilling their fatherhood responsibility, partly out of emotional distress and partly out of male ego. In fact, according to research (by Simukai Shamu and Patience Shamu, among others), more than one in 20 (6.4%) of the 2042 surveyed women admitted their partners’ refusal to support them during pregnancy. Researchers attributed this refusal to reasons such as absence of long-term commitment and gender-unequal practices. They also added that a partner’s refusal to support and take fathering responsibility often worsens maternal distress and increases depressive symptoms in women.

‘Is that a boyfriend or a child?’

Meanwhile, viewers were left bamboozled and cautious over why Jacky had that man as her boyfriend in the first place. Some even shared their own experiences in the comments. For instance, @kadri.naji said, “Is that a boyfriend or a child?” @smcondaa commented, “I will never do this to a boy who doesn’t invest in me with anything.” Similarly, @shawnburgundy remarked, “This tops any of my horror stories.”
