Even when she offered to rent a nearby Airbnb, he warned that doing so without his permission would cause 'issues'
A woman who moved to Canada for her husband faced an impossible choice when he banned her children from their home. When she proposed bringing her kids up during her custody time while he was away in Japan, he drew a firm line. Choosing her children over her relationship, she packed her bags, quit her job, and left. The story was posted on TikTok by the woman @bayandherth on September 10, 2025, pulling in over 2,102 likes and 122,000 views.
It all started when the woman and her Canadian husband eloped in Hawaii in 2021. Early tension surfaced when he continually pressured her parents to fund a lavish wedding, which was a second wedding for her. Despite the awkward dynamic, they maintained a long-distance arrangement for the first year while going through complex custody battles involving her kids from a previous relationship back in the United States. When the court arrangement shifted and the children began spending more time with their father, she made the emotional decision to move to Toronto in 2022 to join her husband.
She traveled back and forth constantly to maintain a tight bond with her children, including nightly calls at 8 PM. However, three years into the marriage, the underlying friction boiled over. When she mentioned bringing her kids up to Canada during her summer custody window while her husband was away in Japan, he drew a firm line. He said, "No, your children will never come into this house." Even when she offered to rent a nearby Airbnb, he warned that doing so without his permission would cause "issues." Standing her ground, she made her position clear: "This is the end of a marriage, by the way, if this happens."
The situation escalated around Father's Day weekend when she drove across state lines from Virginia to Toronto to spend her off-weekend with him. But instead, she met with complete coldness and silent treatment at 2 AM when she arrived. She also mentioned that there were a lot of silent treatments involved whenever they fought regarding her kids. Recognizing that the boundary was non-negotiable, she realized her kids would never be welcome in her marital home.
"If you're not going to be a part of that, then you're not," she recalled telling him before he boarded his flight to Japan. By Tuesday, she quit her Canadian job, hired movers, cleared out her belongings by Wednesday, left her keys at the front desk, and returned to the U.S. for good.

Stepfamily dynamics often introduce unique pressures into second marriages. Research published by the Pew Research Center shows that about 17% of American children live in blended families. Among children, teens ages 13 to 17 are the most likely to live in a blended family at 22%, followed by children ages 6 to 12 at 18%. The share drops to 13% among children age 5 and younger. Additionally, data compiled by Smart Stepfamilies indicates that remarried couples with children face a 50% higher divorce rate than those without stepchildren.
