Rachel left her husband 13 years after he disrespected her over double shots of espresso
Raising kids alone is stressful enough, but an incompetent partner who leaves no opportunity to tear you down makes it even more challenging. For Rachel (@benderachel), a lawyer by profession, the final straw wasn’t a catastrophic betrayal or a dramatic argument, but it was a double shot of espresso she bought for her husband. On October 4, 2026, she took to Threads to share how a minor ordering mishap unveiled an ugly side of her partner. Finally, after 13 years of suffering crystallized into rage, Rachel walked away from his life. The post has since received over 13,000 upvotes.
It all started when Rachel's husband asked her to bring him an espresso while he was working. “Two shots. That’s it,” he clarified. Since he had never ordered a double shot, Rachel verified his order again. "No water? Not an Americano?" she asked, and her husband replied, "Double shot of espresso." Confused, Rachel asked him again, saying she wanted to confirm because it wasn't his usual order. This time, her husband reacted with annoyance. "I get the espresso. I’m already concerned because they put it in a 12 oz cup, and he’s going to think it’s only one shot, not two," Rachel recounted. So, before giving the coffee, she explained to her husband that although it looked like a big cup, it was two shots because she watched the barista make it.
Her husband screamed at her, saying, “Double shots means four shots of espresso.” Bewildered, Rachel told him that he never mentioned four shots. Blinded by his ego, her husband refused to entertain any logic and instead tried to shoo her away from his office. It felt disrespectful, so Rachel tried to stop him. Furious at his egocentric attitude, she wondered, “Why can’t he be the type of person that’s just like, ‘Oh, no worries! I didn’t know you didn’t know that. Thanks for getting me the coffee.’” In an October 25, 2026 post, Rachel shared an update on her marriage. "I filed for divorce," she confessed.
While divorces happen for many reasons, the Gottman Institute emphasizes four major red flags: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling. Among these, contempt is the most destructive factor, which includes rude, disrespectful behavior, as also shown by Rachel's husband. Also, when individuals lack balanced respect or when a partner is controlling or condescending, that often becomes a leading catalyst for marital dissolution. For instance, Wilkinson & Finkbeiner shared that lack of equality is the main reason for divorce in 44% of the cases.
Instagrammers were just as enraged by learning about the rude behaviour of Rachel’s husband. @joeyrhys commented, “Friend. That man does not like you. You deserve so much better.” @timzie_md reflected, “He's totally the kind of guy who's gonna tell people that it came out of nowhere. Proud of you, friend!”
