Healthy relationships often require adjustments from both sides, but sometimes those compromises go too far. A 31-year-old woman (u/dirty_dancer6) experienced just that when her fiancé called her selfish for refusing to join his mom over for lunch. Well, it all started when her partner's mom ghosted her after inviting them for a meal. However, two days later, she called her fiancé in the middle of their meal, insisting they reach her place in an hour and join her for lunch. While the author immediately declined the invitation, her partner stopped eating the food she'd prepared to "save space" for his mom's food. In fact, he left for his mom’s residence almost immediately, only to return and find her engagement ring abandoned on the table. The post shared on September 20, 2026, has received over 2,000 upvotes on Reddit.

Last-minute invite

The author had prepared food for her and her partner after his family ghosted her after inviting them over. However, two days later, while they were having lunch, his mom called and told them to get to her house in an hour. "Obviously, I say no, because you’ve given an hour's notice. It takes me more than an hour to get to her house, and we’ve already eaten," the woman wrote. However, her fiancé accepted the invitation, stopped eating halfway, and got up to leave. He told her to get ready to leave as well but was surprised when she refused. "I once again say no. Had she been more considerate, I would’ve gone," the woman said.

The breaking point

Annoyed, the author's fiancé left without saying goodbye. However, he did say, "Since I am engaged to him, I’m part of his family and should go." This was not the first time something like this had happened. The woman said she knew about his past traumas and his need to go above and beyond for his mother. But she also acknowledged that his extreme attachment to his family had strained their relationship. The couple tried to talk about it, but he ended up yelling at her and calling her inconsiderate. "In that moment, I realized that I could never be with or love a person who flipped on me so quickly over something as small as me not wanting to run off to last-minute plans. I told him I do not want to be engaged, and I wouldn’t marry him. I left my ring on the table this morning when I left," she added.

Mama's boy

There are many reasons why people call off their engagements at the last minute. According to My Gemma, financial stress (45%) is the most common reason. The second top reason is family disapproval (19.5%). It seemed like the author's future mother-in-law did not like her very much, given that the last-minute dinner invite was not the first time she was made to feel like "the other woman." Additionally, 13.1% of the couples blamed people outside the relationship for their failed engagement.

An interesting QuestionPro survey cited by Valdosta found that 29 million men admitted to being a "mama's boy." Meanwhile, 59% also admitted that they enjoyed their mother's cooking more than their partner's. While the author's fiancé never explicitly said his mom's cooking was better, his behavior made his partner feel that way, since he stopped eating halfway through to eat his mother's food.

'Don't marry him'

Meanwhile, reacting to the Reddit post, u/aromatic_recipe1749 commented, "This has happened before, and you’re still engaged? What is wrong with you? You will always be the 'other woman.' Run!" u/boundaries4546 added, "NTA. But you can’t be his fiancée because he is married to his Mommy. Seriously, don’t marry him; you and any future kids will come last behind his family."
