Shaq was checking out luxurious cars to buy, for which he had also set a budget. But a snappy comment by staff at a dealership left him infuriated.
When someone works hard to overcome difficult times, they develop a sense of integrity that stays with them. It stings when others question that without knowing the journey they've been on. According to Carmart Blog, Shaquille O’Neal’s integrity was challenged when a car dealership employee questioned his finances, leading Shaq to buy three Rolls-Royce cars for over $1.3 million on the spot. The basketball legend has built a life of luxury through his hard work and talent, and when questioned, he made sure to teach the critic a lesson.
While Shaq was browsing the cars, deciding whether or not to make a purchase, a staff member asked if he could even "afford" one of the high-end vehicles. Known otherwise for his jovial personality, hearing the unruly comment, the athlete was enraged and decided to show with action rather than words. “I didn’t want to spend $400,000 on a car so I’m like, ‘Hey man, how much is this?’” Shaq recalled while sharing the story on Drink Champs. As soon as he heard the staff, he said, “What the f**k did you say to me?” and he immediately went over and purchased not one but 3 Rolls-Royce that day.
“So, I buy three, that one, that one and that one and I want them dropped off. Move the seat back. I got three Rolls Royce that I never drive. So, there goes another million,” Shaq said. While the athlete’s response may have seemed arrogant, it was fitting for the ruthless critic who passed off an unwanted comment. Shaq didn’t end up driving any of the cars but sure did place the commenter in their place.
Shaq is proud of his success but doesn’t abuse it. While buying the cars may have seemed impulsive, it was more about standing up for his dignity. He worked hard to earn his wealth and wasn’t going to let a passing comment diminish that. In the Earn Your Leisure Podcast, Shaq explained how his wealth is a reward behind his challenging life story and that it is to be earned not given, even if it’s his own kids. “My kids are older now. They are kinda upset with me – not really upset – but they don’t understand. Because I tell them all the time. We ain’t rich. I’m rich,” Shaq remarked.
Shaq went on to explain that he’s not interested in handing down anything that wasn’t earned, whether it’s his business, success, or wealth. "You’ve got to have Bachelor’s or Master’s [degrees] and then if you want me to invest in one of your companies, you’re going to have to present it… bring it to me, I’ll let you know. I’m not giving you anything.”
